Squeaky U-joints?

I am getting a squeak coming from the rear of my 2000 Silverado 4X4. It does this when accelerating. I thought it may have been the brakes but while I accelerated I applied the brakes and the noise continued. Also the noise stops when I let up on the throttle but begins again when it is reapplied. A friend of mine listened to the noise and said U-Joints.

My concern is that the truck only has 45K on it. I am not in the habit of beating on the truck, at least not that often.

Any ideas?

It could be the Universal joints, but I would also check the diffy fluid or better yet, remove the diffy cover and take a look at the internals.

...I agree, sounds like a U-joint. They usually make noise when the power is on. Would be surprised if it was a differential issue at that low K's. You can usually here a sloppy u-joint by sitting and shifting from forward to reverse and you would probably see the defective part if you crawled under and inspected the universals. A defective seal is easy to pick out and you could rotate the driveshaft and take note of any play that exists. Factory joints sometimes don't have grease fittings but the replacement units will. Just a thought, but you might consider replacing all the universals as the others could come due shortly.

Just had to replace one of the front(4X4) U joints on our 2000 Yukon XL at 50,000 miles. It was squeaking something awfull and I thought it was brakes at first too.

Well it was the U-Joint on the front of the rear driveshaft. Now $80.00 later and with 2 greaseable U-Joints (front and rear) all is well.

The bad U-Joint could barely be moved by hand and was nice and rusty inside.
