Speeding ticket

I got a warning about a year ago.

I was on my motorcycle on one of the toll roads here in Texas where the speed limit is 80mph.

I was in the left most lane and the trooper was in the middle lane. I was going close to 80mph, perhaps 82-83 and very slowly passing him.
The moment I was ahead of him, he makes a very quick lane change and lit it up.

I pull over and the first thing he asks me if I’m in a hurry to be somewhere. I said I’m not in a hurry at all. He proceeds to tell me a bunch of stuff, but at that point I’m not saying anything, just gave him the needed documents.

After a short check he comes back with a “warning” as he didn’t find anything else and proceeds to tell me I should be more careful.
OK Mr. mom😆

Lowest speeding ticket around here is C$138....

but then again we have one (!) insurance company here only, it's a gov monopoly in BC and they are in cahoot with police.

9 over on the open freeways is a big fat nothing around here; nobody cares. At least $25 doesn't break the bank.

Silicon Valley needs twice the CHP. Speeders are not a big deal but cutting you off is. It's bad.

I think the safest thing to do would be to INCREASE the highway speed limits from 65 to 75 and then triple the manpower of CHP for enforcement and ticket anyone who is either going 80+, weaving in and out of traffic aggressively, or hogging the left lane pissing everyone off. That would do the most for public safety IMO.

There are times where I'm bouncing off the speed limiter in the Bolt just keeping up with normal traffic - trying to do the speed limit will get you rear ended by regular traffic and/or raged at by semi trucks.

I got hit at 134 in a 100 zone out near Hope a couple weeks ago, I was surprised it was so cheap, $171 if you pay within 30 days. I haven't had a ticket in years and I figured it would be significantly more than that.

I got stopped driving 1 mph below the speed limit once.
I was driving my Father and Grandfather to a funeral in his green, Ford Freestar wheelchair converted minivan on I-49 when I passed a deputy (facing against traffic) radaring at an overpass.
I had the cruise set at 70 and was below that due to the incline of the overpass when I nervously glanced at the speedometer to confirm. Within seconds a gray caravan blew past both of us in the left lane. In my mirror, I saw the cruiser brake lights come on as I lost sight of him.
Needless to say, he shagged me down like a hound on a rabbit. The caravan had sped up and disappeared.

Deputy-"License and registration"
Deputy-"Do you know how fast you were going?"
Me-"Yessir, 69 mph"
Deputy-"Try 80+mph"
Me-"Sir, That wasn't me, It was a gray van that passed me....."
Deputy-"yeah,....okay..."
My already irritated Dad yelling from the back seat-"It wasn't us!! He had the G/D cruise set on 70 and you lost sight of both of us while you turning around back there!!!"
Mostly blind and partially deaf Grandpa from the back-"WHO IS THAT???" "WHAT'S GOING ON???"
Me-"IT'S A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY GRANDPA!! WE'VE BEEN PULLED OVER!"
Grandpa-"WHAT THE HELL DOES HE WANT??"
Me-"HE'S ACCUSING ME OF SPEEDING"
My Dad- "HE WASN'T SPEEDING!!! We're gonna see you in court!!!" (pointing at the deputy and turning red)
Grandpa-AHH!!! BULLSCHIT!!!
Me- (blankly staring at the deputy like I wanted to die.....)
My Dad was still arguing his case when the Deputy quietly walked back to his unit without saying a word and drove off....
Lol that's awesome

Oh, please. He was 9mph over. On an empty road.

Hardly reckless driving.
I know a few staties and they all said +10 over is the usual trigger for normal traffic on a highway. If it's the middle of the day or night with no one else on the road they may give you a few more mph if you slow down after seeing them. If you pretend like they don't exist they pull you over or if you're driving like an idiot, then they'll stop you regardless of your speed.

Ok another confession. When I moved to PA I had a hot date. She told me she just got her car inspected for $65. I said what? I pay $14 in New York State. I seriously considered moving back 😆

Pretty sure same violation in PA is well over $130. I got 52 in a 25 and it was $120. Justice reduced it to 5 over. This was about 16 years ago and I did learn my lesson. Although same road in Calif has a 55 mph speed limit. The lesson was to pay attention and abide by posted limits, the roadway is not always indicative of the maximum allowable speed.
Interesting thing about the Justice you may have went in from if in PA. The Justice likey was a local, who was voted into the position. That justice need not have any legal background to get voted into being the local judge. Interesting approach for this in PA.

Exactly, these are the drivers that need to be targeted. Sitting at the bottom of a hill clocking someone going 9 over is just lazy and does nothing to improve safety on the roads.

You hit the nail on the head. The person I appeared before is no longer there. The person in there now is in fact a lawyer, but most are not. Apparently this is her full time job and it pays $93,xxx. Others use this as a part time job.

Since she’s a bar member, maybe the below training doesn’t apply…

You clearly have never driven through Waldo and that whole 301 cooridor in Florida....

They WILL pull you over for 1MPH over speed limit.
I've heard Waldo isn't as bad as it used to be, but I haven't been through there in a while. There's a town near Orlando (Windermere) that had (maybe still has) a reputation as a speed trap. My G/Fs sister received a ticket for 36 in a 35. I don't recall the outcome (was 40 years ago), but that's one I would definitely fight in court on a good faith defense, assuming the officer bothers to show up.

I wonder what he would have said to me, if he'd spotted the wife and I on our Sportbikes, anywhere near the max. speed of the ride, per the GPS. I'm sure we'd be public enemy No.1, even though not another soul witnessed it...

Got pulled over in Tucumcari, New Mexico (I-40) this morning around 6am for doing 84 in a 75, Officer said if I plead guilty it's a $25 fine. Caught me off guard as 1. I haven't been pulled over in 30+ years, And 2. Never heard of a officer making plea deals on the side of the road.

I plead guilty & paid the fine just now online.

Thought being pulled over on an empty highway in the middle of the desert for doing 9 over was a little extreme. But I didn't voice my opinion :)
Fighting crime! Kicking butts! Correcting the ills of society! Changing the world! SARCASM!!
I’d bet the farm if you would have been driving a loaded down hoopty pile of garbage he would have let you slide. That’s because there actually could be someone running dope and guns that may give some resistance. You sir were low hanging fruit to add to his numbers/quota. I’m an advocate for real law enforcement. Not someone puffed up wearing a uniform that’s scared of their own shadow….

NM is a bankrupt state that panders to illegals. Had it been a car load of them, the cop would have likely never blinked. They see a TX plate and its an almost automatic stop & ticket.

Nothing to do with NM, but TX does some of the same. Mexicans and central Americans drive $500 beater cars with very likely fraudulent paper plates and most cops wont even bother. Its too much of a hassel to pull them over, and they will never pay a fine anyway.

As much as it pains me, I have to agree with you. Especially today with most all of the cars having cruise controls. Many even have radar braking if you creep up behind another vehicle.

You have to knowingly set the cruise above the posted limit. And that "posted limit" is usually displayed in the bottom right corner of your navigation display. Especially on the Interstate Highways.

So today there is all but zero reason to go even 5 MPH over the limit. It would be like putting the wrong heading into an auto pilot, then blaming the airplane for going to the wrong destination..... Or into a mountain.
During CoVid (greatest traffic/driving episode ever!) you had to break 90-100 before CHP would bag you and then if you weren't a mouthy idiot, driving a rolling wreck or under the influence they'd tell you to back off some or write a traffic school/cheapo velocity on it. There was literally no one on the freeway. It was a bad rush hour commute if there was a vehicle within a mile+ ahead or behind me. Any CHP I saw we just waved to each other.

Pre (IIRC 2007?) when they had to pace on interstates (CA) I got one coming down from Truckee for 73 in 55 and the officer piped up in court "well, mr Axenolith was goin' at least a hundred when he went by me but I was only able to get him at 73". Judge looked at me and asked if I wanted to do traffic school... HECK YEA Thanks!

Some supplemental data. I am willing to bet where the OP was pulled over was just past a mountain curve, where the mountain blocks the LE vehicle from forward view. The LEO was on the east side of the mountain.

I was pulled over in what I believe was the same spot in 2014 for a like speed as the OP, when I was transferred from AZ to PA. I did that same run four later times in a 30-day period, and every time a LEO was staged on the east side of the mountain. This spot has been a very productive spot to write speeding tickets for over a decade. A few months ago on the same run, another LEO was in this very fruitful spot. The curve is slight, the grade in a downward slope, and a LEO has full concealment from eastbound drivers until its "too late". Very easy for a law-abiding driver to unknowing find themselves driving faster than the posted speed limit at this location.

In 2014 I learned not to speed in NM. Today I drove 400 miles in NM and made sure to pay careful attention to my vehicle speed.
