Speeding ticket

Another thing today is most cars have 2 speedometers, both digital and analog. And they're a lot more accurate than they were 40 years ago. So there is no reason to be caught going over by any number.

The problem is most of the people on the road all feel there is a 8 to 10 MPH or so, "safe buffer", that most cops will allow you to exceed before stopping you. Because most of the time there is. So it's going to take a lot of tickets for going 4 or 5 over to, "get the word out", in order to stop that kind of thought.

And many times I've been on the highway cruising along with a pack of cars, all going 8 to 12 over the limit, sometimes more. They all feel there is, "safety in numbers", and the cops won't pull anyone over.

And with auto insurance costs astronomically rising today, being found guilty of ANY kind of moving violation could spike your insurance rates to the point of non affordability. Especially for a lot of young people.

Got pulled over in Tucumcari, New Mexico (I-40) this morning around 6am for doing 84 in a 75, Officer said if I plead guilty it's a $25 fine. Caught me off guard as 1. I haven't been pulled over in 30+ years, And 2. Never heard of a officer making plea deals on the side of the road.

I plead guilty & paid the fine just now online.

Thought being pulled over on a empty highway in the middle of the desert for doing 9 over was a little extreme. But I didn't voice my opinion :)
I've read that the ticket clinic that the vinwiki channel swears by really works. But yeah that's weird that they gave you an option right there.

My state has ok speed camera's now. They use them now on the interstate construction work.

Excuse to run your plate for other possible hits is my guess.

Police don't need an excuse to run your plate. Your plate is exposed in a place where the public has a right to be and there is no privacy right attached. The stop is not necessary to run a plate is what I'm stating. The ID of the driver post stop is where the seeking hits (warrant(s); suspension(s)) come into play.

If the OP is accurate rather cheesy for this stop. Yet, $25 seems insanely low. NY court fees are $150+ and that is not your fine, just the fees.

But that's how it should be, if they allow you to do 75 or 80 that should be the speed limit. not speed limit + a random number over
I drive the speed limit. There used to be a 5 mph buffer to account for speedometer error. I've checked all my speedometers with GPS so I know the error. Ford's are 3 mph slow, the dodge is 3 mph and the 4Runner is 1 mph.

It's the same with a vehicle's VIN #. It is displayed for public viewing on the drivers side of the dash, at the lower part of the windshield. I heard it is illegal to cover it up.

As much as it pains me, I have to agree with you. Especially today with most all of the cars having cruise controls. Many even have radar braking if you creep up behind another vehicle.

You have to knowingly set the cruise above the posted limit. And that "posted limit" is usually displayed in the bottom right corner of your navigation display. Especially on the Interstate Highways.

So today there is all but zero reason to go even 5 MPH over the limit. It would be like putting the wrong heading into an auto pilot, then blaming the airplane for going to the wrong destination..... Or into a mountain.

That is a common conception but in practice not so much, at least IMO. I'm jaded though. Look at your village/town/city/state line item budget and you will see expected police revenue. That's targeting YOU for $$$. If OP is accurate, 9mph over posted limit isn't likely causing a public safety risk. Possible NM has updated speed limits but many areas rely on the 40-50 year old studies of speed limits and oh my have vehicles handling and braking abilities improved since then.

Correct. Joe Blow can walk in a parking lot of parked vehicles at a mall and photo every single vehicle VIN and they are not violating the law. Not a wise idea but legal.

Yep. My wife got pulled over twice in the same day for speeding when in Austria. One was in a tiny village. We were shocked when he asked for payment but we were wondering what would've happened if we hadn't been able to pay.

$25 is move on with your life and would not bother thinking about it. Enough they gain money and if in your life $25 is a lot of money and you choose to exceed speed limit you deserve the pain.

Sign of the times.

I bought my first radar detector in 2008 - after the economy crashed and every small town had LEO hiding behind a tree shortly after the speed limit sign which was also behind a tree.

Many of these states were near bankrupt pre pandemic. All the money hand outs saved them. I wondered how long before it was all spent. Guess NM is nearing out.

if speed limits weren't artificially suppressed in order to generate revenue, I would drive the exact limit. they are so I drive as fast as I can without getting a ticket, which is generally 8 over or so, with the exception of small towns. I set the cruise to whatever the sign says there.

I've only been pulled over twice in 30 years. I was 18 driving in White Plains, NY on my way to jury duty and I made a right on red. I was pulled over and after the cop ran my info he said to show up to court and he'll knock it down to disobeying a sign, which is not a moving violation. Sure enough, I showed up to court a few weeks later and 10 mins after showing up the judge accepted the deal, and I paid a fine.

Cute ideas...guessing you guys have not lived near a major metropolitan area, and certainly not driven in one during a busy time. I set my cruise for the speedimit here...I am a sitting duck, just waiting to get killed. Folks are literally dodging around me at the last second only to let the person behind them light up their tires trying to get down to my speed before they slam into the rear of me. 5 over will get you the finger, and passed with extreme prejudice. I have chosen 7 over...which still makes me look like I am sitting still on most days. Speed limits are set in a non-scientific way IMHO, and could be greatly improved.
