My neighbor at the lake keeps a 5gal plastic jug of gasoline on his dock and has had three of them stolen this summer. He asked me what he could spike one with that would do a number on whatever the fuel was burned in. He's looking for something effective, yet cheap and easily available. I didn't know what to tell him,but figured someone here would have a good suggestion.

I've heard bleach does a good job.

we've got an out building on a far corner of our property with mowers and lawn care equipment.

I had to bring all fuel up to the house for the same reason as the OP.

I'm now thinking of some rude surprise for the thief.

Had a similar thread I opened a year ago, I will see if I can find it.
I had a buddy that was getting the tank of his truck siphoned off. He eventually loaded a couple cans of gas in the bed of his truck and left them with a little something special.
A few day's passed and one of the neighbor kids was having their car towed away from a few blocks away where it died.
Don't remember what he used though.

From the research I did, if I remember this correctly, Paint Thinner burns much hotter than Gas. You fill it up with your cheapest stuff and top off that small gas can with 1-2 quarts of paint thinner it should pretty much do a good job of toasting his engine. If it dosn't kill it it should significantly shorten its lifespan.

The other one I thought of was styrofoam. The stuff dissolves in gas. It would stick to injectors and valves once it is burned off.

Perhaps a mixture of paint thinner, Diesil, styrofoam and 87 octane? Heat, knock, and crud build up inside the engine along with possibly coating his valves and Cats?

liquid glass. if it worked for cash for clunkers....

I run coleman fuel (white gas) in my lawnmower and it doesn't know the difference. Hear it's real low octane though.

Water, plain water with just enough gas to give it the correct smell.A little story. One of my brothers works at a local factory. One of the co-workers was stealing peoples food and snacks. So,one of the guys made some 'special' brownies made with Ex-Lax.Lets just say that the guy doing the stealing didnt steal anything else after that.

High alcohol content caused quite a problem last year in Virginia. (Hampton Roads, IIRC)

Rubbing alcohol can have 30% water in the cheap stuff. Mixing enough with gas might do the trick.

If he/she lives nearby, you'll know who it is real soon.

Fixes the cat converter good also.

The dye might give it away. Substitute Lucas UCL. It's the same color as gas.
