Speaking of propane prices.

Got my 20lb filled at the local fresh produce stand for $25 the other day. Got the full 20lbs too, not the 14 you get with exchange.

In addition to fresh produce and propane, they sell fishing tackle, boiled peanuts, local shrimp (its flash frozen on the boat, so you get it frozen still) and there is a lady selling fresh pita's at a window in the back if you come around lunch time. I told them to add whiskey and gasoline and I may never need to go anywhere else :)
Cost me $20 here in GA at a propane store last week. Only time I exchange a tank is if I have one that's so old they won't fill it.

Are propane companies allowed to put 20 pds in a 20 pd tank? I thought there was an 80% rule, which would be 16 pds. Is that wrong?

20 lbs is the amount you get with adequate extra space. I had a "pro" loosen a screw at the valve neck until liquid propane started spitting out, I think he gave me a very-full fill, not that I'm complaining.

However, "pds" is the inappropriate abbreviation for pounds, you want "lbs." ;)

There is this. I think the 80% issue is already taken care of. When you put 20 lbs of propane into the tank there is already 20% of extra space in it. Why exchange tanks are not filled to 20 lbs might have to do with them being transported in enclosed trucks.

That's the way my guy does it, too. I wasn't really paying attention to the scale, but I will next time.

Yes here too and only $13 for a full tank
vs much higher price with 25% less propane if you exchange a tank elsewhere.

$3.75-$4.25 per gallon + tax at the U-Haul company stores around Apple Valley.

The closest U-haul with propane is 30 minutes away in light traffic and realistically more like 45 minutes. The exchanges are expensive but I can get one within 5 minutes of my house. I wish this wasn't the case as I used to fill them up but it is what it is for me. When you're a busy family man with a stressful tech job sometimes it's just easier to hit the easy button.

Do any places fill by the gallon? If you have a tank that is not empty but you want a fill up for an upcoming BBQ you want to pay by the gallon rather than a set price for a full tank.

The True Value I go to sells by the gallon. $3. I don't think they make much money on propane after they pay the wages of guy filing the tanks. There usually a line whenever I go there, so it does bring customers into the store.

Most do not realize when you do a tank exchange you do not get a full tank. The tank is filled about 75% @ 15Lbs vs 20Lbs for a full tank.
When you go to have your tank filled and not exchanged you will get a 20lb full tank. (just make sure on the fine print)

Here is the perfect explanation. AS I posted I pay $13 to have have my propane tank filled to full 20Lbs.

I just had my residential propane tank topped off here in the Sou. Cal. mountains. I got 50 gallons on some kind of promotional rate @ $2.99 per gallon, and another 68 gallons @ $4.64 per gallon. Plus a $15 hazmat fee and a $17.50 fuel surcharge fee. That comes to just under $500. I sure hope this isn't another long, cold winter. Last year I had two tank top off's and each one was over $725.

Luckily my home if only a few years old and has all the energy efficient features. I use propane for the furnace, dryer and stove. My electricity bill is rarely above $85 but the propane cost is just a killer during the peak season.
