I am now driving my first gas powered car since 1998 (others were diesels) and I noticed that the plugs in my Civic are supposed to be good for 100,000 miles.

will they even come out after that mileage? what's the general consensus?

They will "last" that long, and Im sure they will keep the motor running as well. But performance will suffer and there are too many variables that may reduce the output for such a blanket statement.

I am in an '06 Toyota and I will be changing my plugs every 2yrs/ 20K miles. Probably overkill, but plugs are cheap and I like working on the car.

100K is more of a target than what you actually get from your plugs. It depends on the car and how long you let problems slide than can affect your plugs. My ZX2 needs plugs every 60K. You could at least inspect the plugs every 30-60K.

Yeah, they are platinum and designed to do the distance. I would still pull them at around 60k and check them, then put them back in with some anti-sieze if they are good, which they probably will be. Or you could replace them up to you.

They should last for 100K. You could just check them every 25K miles or so. I'd pull them and get some anti-seize on the threads ASAP though. After working as a bicycle mechanic during university, unlubricated aluminum threads are scary to me!

As a Honda tech I have to say that unfortunately the plugs in your Civic will indeed last 100K and they won't give you any trouble when it's time to remove them. Change them more often if you enjoy spending money on your car.

I changed my 96 sunfire at 94k oem plugs out. I took them out and the platinums were fine.

I got 50k on my second set of plugs ever. I'll probably do them again at 60-70k miles if I'm bored.

Yeah, something went wrong along the line with my plugs in my 2.2L. When I pulled them with 60k the gaps were nearly bridged on all of them with a hard white substance. Looked like white volcanic rock or something. I never did figure out what it was....

The Honda NGK Iridium (or Double Platinum?) plugs will last for 100k easily without any performance problems. I really don't think seizing is an issue contrary to what others have speculated...listen to what Mokanic says.

A high quality double platinum like AC Delco or NGK will last a 100,000 miles, but you need to take them out and re-gap them before 90,000 miles because the gap widens as the electrodes wear.

The coils will go out before the spark plugs. It seems Honda has similar problems as VW with them. My brother just got a new set of coils under warranty on his Civic due to misfire issues. The spark plugs, however, are fine. Great, plugs only cost a few dollars and last forever and the coils cost hundreds and fail first.

thanks to all for your opinions. I've got about 30,000 miles on it now, maybe I'll wait till about 75,000 miles or as JIMBO says, wait for the coils to fail and replace everything at that point.

I just changed our Civics at 110k and they looked like garbage, surprised they ran so well.
never had an issue with coils.
replaced with NGK V-power

Why NGK V-Powers? You enjoy replacing plugs ???

The correct Autolite Double Platinum plugs run $4/each normally, and with the current mail-in rebate, would run you the same price as the NGK V-Power plugs.
