It filters the air in the cabin that cools the high voltage battery under the back seat on my Corolla Hybrid. I think the previous owner had a dog.

Don't be so quick to blame it on the dog. The previous owner may have suffered from hair loss. Smell the filter to confirm.

Prii the vintage of mine lacked that filter, so people who transported animals in them often had trouble with the battery overheating.
I don't do that, and the previous owner apparently didn't either. I added an improvised filter cut from a furnace filter and tied to the inner side of the intake grill.
