Son's 2006 Toyota Prius

My son has come by a 2006 Prius, lent to him by a friend of my sister. It is in very good shape. He will drive it to Boston in January. Toyota suggests 5000 mile oil changes. Can these be "stretched" to 7500 or 10,000 with synthetic oil? It uses 5w30. Also, nowhere does it say in the manual if this hybrid uses a timing belt or chain. Anyone know?

Since it will be mostly hwy, I would say, yes.

Yes. A friend has a Prius with 160K, all on 10K OCIs.

Timing Chain, service intervals are every 5k. The engine is not hard on oil, but I would still recommend 5k intervals for warranty compliance, especially since this is a borrowed car.

+1 with the critic. It is the right thing to do, earlier rather than later because it is a borrowed item. Use the right syn oil at the dealer too.

Since it is borrowed, Id likely also return it with a fresh change and fresh tank of gas.

Oh Critic you're too nice. Do as most friends do with borrowed rides. Beat the snoot out of it and return it with an empty tank. Oil change, please they don't change it on their own cars
