Clavier was the word use for piano in it's current state of development back then.
Well-tempered meant that it was tuned to be able to play in all of the keys that songs were commonly played in back then.

Sergei Rachmaninoff left Russia and came to the US. The 2nd movement of this piece was heisted by Eric Carmen for "All By Myself"
