Son gave me a deal on a JD D140 rider

Easy to say now, but no-one admits to neglect when a transmission goes south without having ANY maintenance done. A couple of hours work and the old fluid is replaced with new. If nothing else, it's a good feeling that something was accomplished...;>)
I'm glad that my X390 trans is serviceable...
Very true. My mower has 321 hours on it and the factory states the hydrostatic transmission fluid should be changed at 300 hours. I checked on U-tube and it looks easy to take it apart and change the fluid. By easy it's probably a two hour job. I will do it this winter in the garage when I get bored. It's all labor and the fluid isn't that expensive. The mower is in really nice shape and I put new mulching blades on it today and have a mulching plate and front bumper bar coming from Amazon. I also ordered a new seat for only $105 from Amazon so it will look like new. I also greased all the zerks on the mower.

Interesting you brought up the 5w-50. I’m getting ready to do the change in my x540 and debating switching to that instead of low vis Hygard.
Do what you want it’s a free country, but consider a THF that meets both J20C & D.
Viscosity equal to 0W30 or there about.

The manufacturer recommends 5w50, Deere recommends their lo viscosity. Which one do you pick to follow? The one who builds the transmission or the one who builds the lawn tractor? J20D is essentially a 0w-16 and J20C is a 10w-30. Tuff Torq says 5w-50. If you read up on people with weak k46 and swapping to 5w-50 from Hygard, the consensus is interesting.

Anyway, was actually thinking about just getting the amsoil 5w-30 THF. It seems to have a good dose of PAO and esters.

The one that builds the tractor and covers the warranty.
Like you I’ve read about weak k46 transmissions and for me a reason not to buy a S240 with the Kawasaki engine, but to move up to a 300 series and get a heavier duty K58 transmission.
According to tractor data, your x540 has a TT L72A, which I suppose is the same transmission as the Kanzaki k72.
Recommend fluid like you said is low vis J20D.
Moving up in viscosity to a fluid that meets both J20D & C, imo is a step in the right direction without throwing out the baby with the bath water, or trying to reinvent the wheel.
In your tractor, the thf operates more than just the transmission. It shares sump capacity with the power steering and hydraulic deck lift.

Valid point on warranty, mine has been out of warranty for 10 years now. Triax utto supreme might end up being my choice. Good does of PAO. Half the cost of amsoil but very stout and excellent cold flow (need this for winter work and unheated garage). A few Deere docs actually referenced Triax utto as an alternative years ago.
Yes, on the x540 it operates more than the trans. The trans axle has 2 drain plugs, one for the trans and one for the auxiliary hydraulics, and a filter. That little filter must be laced with some gold, it’s almost $50.

PDS on the Triax fluid shows;
40C 52
100C 10.7
J20C

For comparison, Petro-Canada synthetic Duratran;
40C 46.4
100C 9.88
J20C J20D

For winter operation fluids that pass J20D are recommended.

Yes, I already know all this via the PDS and SDSs. The Triax Supreme is J20D as well, not just J20C.

I searched Triax and every thread on the topic went sideways.
I’ve never heard of Triax before, so what’s the consensus on the brand?

Saving a few bucks on 5 litres of THF fluid once every 10 years makes no sense to me.
