My son inherited a zero turn JD mower with 35 hours on it and sold me this for $550. He's a great son and I love this mower. It's quite an upgrade from my Troy Bilt Bronco that I sold on FB marketplace in 2 hours.

I am soon to complete my 12th season of mowing my 1 acre with a 2013 D140 that now has 440 hours. With respect...I am not understanding how "zero turn" applies to this mower. If I need to be educated on this, please do so.

Very nice! As mentioned the trans is the weak point (same trans as my Husqvarna and other models) but under normal use it does just fine. I changed the fluid once on mine. I would have thought if your son got it free why did he sell it to his dad?? I would never charge my parents for anything especially if I didn't pay for it. Sorry, I know not my business but it was the 1st thought that came to my mind when reading your post.

The pictured mower is not a zero turn. His son inherited a zero turn and sold him the pictured mower since I assume he no longer needed it.

My son actually purchased it for about $450 and did an oil change, air filter, new blades, and a new battery so he had $550 in it and only used it a few times on his lawn. A relative passed away and he inherited the zero turn John Deere mower with less than 50 hours on it. Therefore I didn't feel he should give it to me because it's worth $1000.00 all day long to sell to someone on marketplace that he doesn't know. In other words he did pay for the mower he sold to me. The reason he didnt try to make a huge profit on it was because I give him a lot of things for free. I was very happy to get if for $550.

Looks like T40 in this is a JD exclusive K46 "Lite" model. Was curious so went searching for info on the T40...

Looks like that thread is 15yrs/old. You can bet nothing good has happened in terms of build quality from then until now unfortunately.

I just knew there was a good reason and that sure is! That is good son and great deal! My apologies as I did not intend to offend - I just think out loud sometimes.

I think the tough torq transmission issues are overblown. You hear all of the bad stories because not many mention the good stories. almost every brand sold through the big box stores have some form of k46 transmission.

Easy to say now, but no-one admits to neglect when a transmission goes south without having ANY maintenance done. A couple of hours work and the old fluid is replaced with new. If nothing else, it's a good feeling that something was accomplished...;>)
I'm glad that my X390 trans is serviceable...

I found a diagram that says the T40 has a black cap under the cooling fan where the fluid can be serviced. Nice riding mower, enjoy.

I am going to find all the grease points and figure out how to service the fluid. I have the original owners manual but have spent all my time detailing it. I ordered a brand new seat since the original seat has a tear in it. I replaced two burned out headlight bulbs and that works now. I ordered mulching blades and the front right wheel was missing a yellow axle/grease hub cover and ordered those from Amazon. I also ordered a mulching cover for the side discharge. I actually detailed it quite a bit more after taking the pictures. I like to keep my stuff looking nice and clean as well as buffed, waxed, and shined.

Problem is you have to take the operators station off to get to that black cap and there’s no drain plug. Doable but a huge pain. Most people pull the trans and turn it upside down to drain out all the fluid and then refill, or tap a new fill and drain plug.

That's what we did when my input shaft sheared its pulley teeth and had to be replaced on my K51 unit. Popped the cap off and drained all the 10w-30 factory fill.

Refilled with Castrol Edge 5w-50, got about 1.5 quarts back into it IIRC.

Interesting you brought up the 5w-50. I’m getting ready to do the change in my x540 and debating switching to that instead of low vis Hygard.

TT has their own fluid which they highly recommend, shock! Its the Tuff Tech hydro drive stuff which is a 5w-50 syn-blend.

People have run 10w-30/40, 5/15/20w-50...essentially anything works. I think we went with the Edge 5w-50 at the time because it was a full synthetic and way cheaper than the Tuff Tech fluid. Plus, no need for a 3L jug, only needed two quart bottles. Now that I think about it, I believe I still have the leftover bottle still sitting on the shelf. As mentioned, the factory fill was a conventional 10w-30 on mine and that lasted for 10+ years in it. Stuff was blacker than death coming out.

Next time I change it, whenever that may be, I will probably just go with a 15w-50. I don't use the mower during winter, so a 5w is not needed. But who knows, whatever Xw-50 full synthetic is cheapest at the time will probably be the winner.
