When a passing bike is so loud that it hurts my ears with my window up, going down the highway, then it's too loud. ESPECIALLY when it's not even beside me yet! There is just something (to my ears at least) about Harley pipes and glasspack mufflers that makes them earsplitting loud. There's a kid down the road from me that likes to leave his girlfriend's house at 9-10-11:00 at night, on the pipes as he goes. I've lost count of how many times he's woken up my better half.

And I'm not too old, I'm 35 years old and like to have fun, but not at others' expense or at the cost of my hearing.

The worst is when they pull up beside you in a tunnel and start reving the thing wot. So annoying.

Yeah I agree. Especially when these guys are driving recklessly and trying to draw attention. They aren't helping the stereotype.

There seems to be a "new redneck" because of the show. Traditionally around here, rednecks were the farm kids who drove old beat up trucks that were loud. There weren't many around, and besides being loud they didn't cause too much trouble. They usually were alone or with another person, and were surprisingly polite despite their "tough" appearance. I never had a problem with them before, and even knew some of them pretty well.

Now they seem to act more like a gang. They drive brand new jacked up diesels that are ear-piercingly loud and they do anything to draw attention, including rolling coal and smoking out entire intersections. They intentionally drive recklessly just to prove their "toughness" to other drivers. All of these trucks usually have some form of camo on them. The mentality around here seems to be slap some camo stickers on your truck and you are a tough guy. Despite the camo stickers, hardly any of these guys actually hunt, and almost none of them work on a farm. Many local businesses around here have had problems with them. They come in and intentionally make a mess, they destroy gardens by driving through them, and they make lots of noise at all hours of the night. They make the traditional rednecks look bad. And forget being polite, I was in a store the other day and there was a group of them shouting profanity at each other while there was a bunch of little kids around. Its embarrassing to me that most of these guys/gals are my age.

I agree. Its hard to stand out when EVERY SINGLE truck on the road has a loud exhaust. I actually tend to notice the trucks that are not loud, since they seem to be rare.

As much as I love all things mechanical, I really dont like the sound of a harley. They just sound like an old gas powered Craftsman air compressor to me.

I rode, and kept it stock, and am of the "loud pipes take rights" camp. Until it's feasible to have a muffler aiming forwards, they only point at people they've already passed and ticked off.

The biggest cause of crashes here are idiot cagers who figure they can turn left after a line of oncoming cars, and don't see the bike in the "gap". Believing bikers to be human is the first step toward respecting their road space.

And +2 to a nicely tuned exhaust. One can have cackle without the gunshot.

I like loud cars at the race track, but on the road? Quieter is better.

Q ships and GT cars are what I like, I don't want to have to hear the exhaust drone on long trips.

Don't get me wrong, I like loud stuff, it just irritates me when I'm afraid to get hassled (in public places, not driving thru residential areas) for a loud stereo, when people ride their muffler-delete bikes and get a proverbial thumbs up from the cops. As with everything else, there's a time and a place, but there also needs to be the respect for person freedoms. I happen to like the loud exhaust of a diesel truck. I happen to find the IDEA of 'rolling coal' on morons driving a Prius hilarious, but don't think I'd actively partake in such shennanigans. I grew up with and love diesels, so I just love the sound, and an aftermarket exhaust or straight pipes sound good to me. How you choose to use that exhaust, however, is what differentiates a person from a [censored].

Unfortunately, I'm sure the riders of straight piped harleys could argue the same thing.

A straight piped diesel tractor puller sounds great at the local fair. I grew up around tractors and love the sound they have. Hearing every straight piped cummins, powerstroke, or duramax on the road as they pass by me gets very old very quickly. Nobody wants to hear a straight piped automatic diesel pickup truck as it slowly rolls through the gears as they drive by. Powerstroke and Duramax diesels in particular just sound like an angry elephant when straight piped.

They can run straight piped for racing, truck pulling, offroading, or whatever, but not on the street.

I don't think they're that loud unless they're heavy into the throttle. Certainly not as loud as a Harley.
