This was the view from my office window one morning in January 2017:

This screenshot from Environment Canada was from a week or so earlier. It amused me that the extreme cold warning was lifted when the temperature rose to -30 C and the windchill dropped to -40 C.

It's really all about the wind. -35 C in still air with the sun on you is fine. I've felt colder at +7 C with grey clouds and a howling wind.

But anyway, to tie it back to BITOG, you can understand why I use synthetic oil.

(Off topic - Adam, congrats on your Pengies' success to date - I could see the Jets and Penguins meeting in the final. Matt Murray is an incredible young goaltender, and I don't have to say anything about Sid the Kid.)

I find at -30C if your vehicle is sitting outside and is stone cold, it’s really nice to have a 5wx or even a 0wx in the crankcase. Frigging embarrassing if your ride doesn’t start up when your co-workers’s does.

By the way, if the cold is not enough wait for the mosquitoes in July. A lot of people don’t like Winnipeg’s mosquitoes. But not me. I love them. Especially when you gut them and pan fry’em in butter.

Yeah, I doubt Nashville will get past the Jets. Vegas Knights will be tough though

I believe -40C is the point where you can't even walk from the house to the garage in a T-shirt without getting frostbite on the way. I'll go out on the deck and check the furnace vents aren't covered with snow at -20C without putting a coat on, but I sure wouldn't do that at -50C.

When I moved out here as a student in '78 I was absolutely committed to Quaker State 10w30. I also wasn't used to plugging in a block heater. The car (a '68 Impala) once started @ -38 C not plugged in, but rattled away for what seemed like an eternity before the oil light went off. (It was probably 10 seconds.) Can't have done the engine any good.

I started using synthetics in the mid-80s and never went back. What a difference when you can't plug in!

No excuse on my part ... I came out here in '78 for 'one year of school'. What can I say?
