I'd be a Mobil1 guy if I had that engine

Using a high quality synthetic does nothing to prevent the GM 5.3 from burning oil. Many examples on the forums of oil burners using Mobil 1 @3k mile OCIs.

For the most part I agree, a vast majority are not salvageable without the PCV valve cover & AFM shield fix, and even still some need to be re-ringed. However given he is asking for recommendations, I still believe a short interval synthetic puts him in a better position to combat it than a conventional if his motor is one of the borderline ones.

Just looking at the detergency and solvency of Mobil1 to help with the ring packs and trying to break down any carbon grunge.

I'f I had that motor and it started using oil, I'd lay a heavy dose of Break Free (gun solvent for carbon fouling) into each plug hole and let it soak over night. Fire it up the next day, warm it up, change the oil to Mobil1 HM and see where it goes...

If the engine needs mechanical help, so be it. If the rings are free and working, it might go a bit longer

Thanks for all the replays. One thing I forgot to mention was that I do keep it in a garage every night. It is not heated, but is insulated.

I haven't noticed any oil consumption at all yet. I absolutely love this truck and want to make sure she lasts as long as possible. I clocked the mileage this week and it is 1.5 miles. The short commute is incredible convenient, but until I read this forum I had never considered how hard it was on the truck.

I am in south central MT, winters here are usually pretty mild. We get a little below 0 weather but it usually only lasts a week at the most. The rest of the time is usually between 0 and 20 I would guess. There is the occasional hit that will bring it down to 20 or 30 below for short stints. When it does get below 0, I like to let the truck warm up a couple extra minutes.

Yikes, that sounds anything but mild!

A friend at work went through this with his 2007 with the 5.3L. They replaced the rings and some other things but he still continued to have problems. He kept the truck for about five years and traded it in on a 2014 Sierra I believe. GM gave him a $5,000 voucher toward the price of a new truck for all of his problems with the other one.
