So we're all buying Toyotas now 🤔

Some people misunderstood, I won the eBay auction, it's not free

$1426 was the final bid

I'm getting shipping quotes to get it the 30 miles or so home, because how can I drive with no plates🤷‍♂️
You know AAA memebership can be prorated right? Get the higher end membership for at least 5 days in advance, tow it home for less than 100 miles, cancel it afterward if you want.

I have AAA Premier
I didn't think they'd tow a vehicle with no plates that isn't registered to me
They only help with roadside assistance, not people buying cars?
But I wound up driving it home, so it wasn't a big issue

You can just put a plate on it to tow it home, you can say it just stopped working on the return trip. You can use it for a "friend" and it is "road side", tow truck drivers usually don't care as long as the id and the membership matches. You can only use it 4x a year anyways, it is not like a massive abuse to AAA.

I used it to move 2 cars between places when I only have 1 driver, despite the car being fully functional. If I tell the tow truck driver it overheat and may have a bad head gasket they would not even attempt to start it for fear of liability later on. They still get paid, why would they rock the boat?

The sign of the devil 😈 😂
That explains the tamper paint on the drain plug
It wasn't stripped, I'm very surprised 🤔
Off with the unknown old oil and Mighty filter
On went the long Toyota YZZF1 filter, and 4.5qts of Milesyn 5w20 I had laying around from some previous cars
Sounds a little better 🤷‍♂️

Cut down some H9s for the low beams, now you can actually tell when they're on
A polishing kit is on the way

Just a day of cleaning, lubing, bulb changing, plastic clip replacing, trash throwing

Might let the ozone generator run for an hour or two, let it air out over the next few days, as I'm still waiting for plates/registration

My mother will take a look at it, as will my sister's boyfriend, as they're both semi vaugely maybe ❓ interested in it

Change your transmission fluid, more than once!

I got my Camry for two D&Fs and she's amazing now, but wasn't bad before.

The idea of "the clutch silt holding it together" is an old wive's tale.
I'm thinking about it

My father's old fashioned, and he ran a transmission shop in the 80s, and discouraged me from doing it

It's got a slight whine in first, but all 4 gears are present and correct

My Toyota parts man told me he'd sell me WS for $10 a qt

So after a filter/gasket, crush washer and fluid, it'd be $100 or so to fully service it

With 281k on it, there's no evidence or history of it ever being serviced

I threw the ozone generator in it and ran away 😂
It's my first time using it
It'll run for the 60ish minutes I've set it for, and then it'll sit overnight

Tomorrow's the last warm day for a week or two, I'll let it air out real thorough for the day

The filter on my camry's just a rock catcher.

I did the gasket, but bought the wrong one... there are a couple different 4 speed trannies around.

Got a 10-pack of aluminum crush washers from ebay, good, because I did the diff drain and fill plugs as well.

You need a 10mm allen for the drain plug. Just doing one drain & fill would be under 3 quarts.

Rockauto has Aisin WS fluid for $7 last I looked.

Good call on eBay, it's the same aluminum crush washer that my Camry uses

I've serviced the Camrys U151E (5AT) with the specified Toyota T-IV or 3309 multiple times

This xB (despite being 3 years newer) has the U241E (4AT) that specifies ATF WS

I'll think about it, because I've still got at least a week of cold weather and waiting for insurance/registration

I've always been a pro transmission service, but this is the first vehicle I've dealt with this high a mileage

This is a fun thread. Nice work. Rust condition is great IMO for the locale. any plans to spray something on it to slow it down? It looks like, to me, it just started getting through the factory protective layer.

yes to the trans drain/fill. If you are nervous, just do it 1x and drive it for a bit. No issues, do it a second time. It will take 3 drain/fills to get most of the fluid. There’s not a real filter in these, no real need to drop the pan. You get to learn the toyota straw method on these, which isn’t bad, really.

I've heard the rule for automatic transmissions is "change the transmission fluid every 60,000 miles or don't touch it".

I haven't had a vehicle with an automatic transmission since the 1980s so you shouldn't listen to me. But at the very least, don't flush that transmission.

Do a temporary registration at your dmv, or a state that lets you.
