So we're all buying Toyotas now 🤔

30 miles ? I would roll the dice and use an escort vehicle . Make sure it has insurance . But that's just me .

I would rather invest the $$$ in something that potentially increases in value

could probably flip it for 3k here pretty easy.
100 bucks for brake parts on rock auto.. 5bux oil change out of stash.

Basically the OP bought a vehicle that may need extensive engine work......but he doesn't need it for anything so I guess that's a good thing. I would think the NADA values cited earlier in the thread would assume a road worthy vehicle...

Well. my '05 xB cost $13,900 new, it might only have a ~$3K book value, but it also has gone a nearly trouble-free 117K miles, and will keep going until the body rusts off... Not happening yet! I couldn't replace it for $30K, even the (not as good) Kia Souls are in the $25 grand range now!

My guess the soak will not help anything with the oil consumption, it may make it worst, because it is typical the valve seal will break down after 10 years. Old seal plus Kroil is recipe for quick destroy.
I bet. Use caution with Kroil. Of course the cost would probably prevent many from using it. I used to order it at work and it was insane expensive.

You're doing this on the cheap, but you're worried about plates? Live a little. Tape the bill of sale in the rear window and if challenged say "bUT thAt's HoW I do IT BacK hOMe!"

Or get a vermont temp tag online and print it yourself.

Looks cute and rust free. Let us know how it looks underneath-- I see a few of these running great but rusted to bits up here.

Update, it's home and accounted for
My fathers car service very nicely loaned him a dealer plate for the afternoon, so we went to fetch it
We drove it up the block to a gas station, filled it, affixed plate and off we went
I drove it, my father following in Camry
The owner wasn't lying when he said the brakes were grinding, but they made it the 30 miles home from Jersey to SI
It does 65, that I can vouch for
All gears present
The idle is meh, and sometimes it needs an extra crank or two to start, but never stalled or failed to respond
Heat/AC appear to work, as does all windows and locks (D/S glass scratched tho)
I got all 3 keys, plus the keycode and owners manual
Neither keyfob worked, fresh batteries fixed that
Filled the gas, took it for a $20 car wash to knock the big dirt loose
Looks presentable, except for the hood
There's a minor front end clunk, I'm thinking more sway bar bushing/link than anything major
Ride was most impressive for inferior Ironman tires, and torsion beam rear suspension, and the high mileage
It's gonna be cold for the next week or two, so I'll fix little this and that things for little to no money before I put in a $250 order or so for brakes, filters, wiper blades, maintenance bits and pieces
I've got an old USA-SPEC Bluetooth kit laying around from when my Camry had its factory HU, I might order a replacement mic and throw it in
Bluetooth calling/streaming on a factory radio with steering wheel control is most necessary in todays driving

That's more like it 💡
Both brake lights were internally blackened, plate lights were out, thank god I order bulbs in bulk on RockAuto
P.O removed the plates before I arrived, and after 13 NJ winters, the bolts snapped
Those will be fun to drill
The headlights are a cruel joke, between lousy H11 output and haze, I don't know how anyone could drive at night
I might allocate $12 to the H9 mod, and a few minutes with a polish pad and compound to clean those up

The cold start was significantly better this morning
Maybe the overnight tendered battery and fresh gas helped
Did some minor stuff, swung by the Toyota dealer and ordered $70 worth of miscellaneous items
I'm still 50/50 on servicing the transmission
Its presumed never touched @ 281k
Do I dare
Found the broken tack nuts that held the tailgate striker down, so that could be adjusted and tightened, now the tailgate stays securely shut
Between the loose tailgate, and the loose spare tire/tools, and the misadjusted hood bumpers, this things gonna be a lot quieter ride when it hits the road again
Drilled the snapped plate bolts, replaced some more burnt out light bulbs
Oil change is set for Monday, because snow's a coming at this time

The scratches on the window may have been done with a metal tool used as an ice scraper.

In my opinion, you've beautified Staten Island a little. I'm a former resident.
Do you remember the foreign car parts yard on "Richmond & Richmond" (Rd. & Terrace)?

That sounds a little before my time

Ace Auto Salvage has been around for an eternity, and Speed car service is still kicking

But we still have an alarming amount of gas station "shops" that still proudly tout "We work on foreign AND domestic" 🤨

Right up there with COMPUTER DIAGNOSIS :ROFLMAO:

Aux/USB, and Bluetooth streaming & calling installed
H9 bulbs have been ordered, turns out neither low beam bulb was installed correctly, might explain the piss poor output

Put it on the ramps to prep for oil change/piston soak, got my first look underneath

For having seen 12 NJ winters, I think that looks pretty reasonable
