Had to stop by Walmart today and since Murphy gas station is on the same property I thought I would get some overpriced chips for the road.

Saw these jugs near the fuel tank fill area. I always thought gas stations mixed their additives at the bulk storage facility when loading into trucks but it looks like Murphy gas station mixes their diesel winter additives on site when the truck arrives. I was curious so I asked the cashier about the Power Service Arctic Express bottles outside and she confirmed that was for the truck driver to pour into the tanks when he drops the load.

Seems like to many opportunity's for error but that's the way they do it.

I can see it if you are in charge of a fleet, you are able to oversee the whole fueling operation. But a gas station? Cashier makes minimum wage doesn't care. Truck driver is cold and tired might forget or not even see it. Did he put in the right amount? Can he even read the dosage instructions on the jug at 3 AM? Did someone steal the jugs or swap them out with something else? If I'm filling up at the time, did I just get a big slug of Arctic Express in my truck?

I would guess that operations like Shell, Mobil, Loves or Flying J don't do it this way.

In my experience as a fleet mechanic, the additive is poured into the underground storage tank for diesel during a fuel drop.

Yep.

There’s a tanker driver on YouTube named Life On 18 Wheels and in one video he pours the jugs of treatment into the tanks before transferring the diesel from tanker.

If I find the video I will post it.
