Had a mishap this afternoon, and I'm still really ticked off. Went to the local supermarket, only to come out after 20 minutes and find out I've been a victim of hit and run.

My right rear fender is severely dented inwards, and I've got a $350 bill out of nowhere. Some @$$hat must have been backing up at at least 40 km/h (25 MPH) to dent the fender, and push my truck into the Holden Commodore/Chevrolet Lumina that was parked next to me. Called the cops, who registered the incident but there are no cameras in the parking lot.

Thankfully, I wasn't responsible for the Lumina, but I've only got third party insurance, so I have to pay my repair fee out of my own pocket. Vehicles over 5 years old are not eligible for comprehensive insurance here, otherwise I am happy to pay the extra and opt for it. Now it's coming out of my own pocket and it's not even my fault!

Sorry to hear...The exact thing happened to my sister in her 07 Grand Marquis a few months back...The end result was she paid 1200 bucks to have the quarter panel and rear bumper cover repaired..A while back someone let a grocery cart roll into my 88 Town Car..Never saw who did it..The bill for going out for milk that day was 350 bucks..Now we all park way in back of the lot..Even in the pouring rain.

Bummer. I worked with a guy who had that happen to him in the parking structure by the office. A couple years later he got a phone call and the guy confessed and paid up. Sadly that is not the normal case. Report it to the police, at least if they know what happened they might have a slight chance (1 in a million?) of finding the culprit, especially if they get some guy who has your paint color on his back bumper and it's freshly smashed.

Wow a couple years later the guy owns up! I'm still mad about my 88 Ranger with a fresh shiny blue paint job being hit and run in my HS parking lot. Carlos I know you did it. I had witnesses I called the cops and they drove to your house and you said you didn't do it and they believed you. A pox on you!

ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, I have scratches on my car from others "bumping" my car as they pull in or out. I have never had them quoted. I drive a Ford Taurus, and for those who I offend I apilogise, cosmetic issues with this car dont bother me. It runs well, it is safe to drive, and I really love it.
But it was never intended to be good looking.

However, I have had people hit my Father and Sister and run. My sister went through 6 months of rehab to work out the backpain, and this is while she was in highschool.
The truck that hit my Father and sister belonged to an illegal immagrant who was uninsured and lived in a house with no phone. Several people saw the accidnet and gave the police a description and license plate number. The police and insurance agency did track him down, but my folks never pressed any charges. The guy was busting his but to make ends meet and there was nothing there to sue.
Being that "Hit and Run" is a crime, and the guy was illegaly here and uninsured I always have wondered if he was deported back to Mexico.
In the long run my folks van was totaled and my sister recovered. Poop happens.

This is reason # 2513 that I bought a motorcycle. I made the agreement with myself from the onset that the bike was to be the sacrificial lamb. It's used for all commuting, errand running, etc. so that my $23,000 scratchless, dentless car can sit in the garage, far from the ravages of people who don't give a #$%& about other peoples' property. If it gets scratched, knocked over, stolen, etc. it would p*ss me off, but it's still better than having that done to my car.

Sorry about your car. It's a sad truth that there's little to no ethics, personal responsibility or respect left in society.

Walked out to my Volvo to find the left front signal light lens lying broken on the pavement, alongside the car.

A kid working on an adjacent construction site called out asking if that was my car. I said, yes it is. He apoligized for the damage and offered to pay for it. I told him to forget about it.

Sometimes its just nice finding another human being with a conscience.

That's why I park in BFE. I rather walk half a mile than to have to deal with the aftermath of some idiot's carelessness.

I've had the side mirror stolen out of my car while I was out, not to mention theft of a stereo... It happens. You can call the cops, maybe over there they can cut his hand off or stone him to death if he's found?

This happened to me. The police said unless that person comes and confesses there's no chance they'll catch them, and they won't devote resources over petty property damage like this. You're outta luck. It ruins your day/week but then you think about the people in the world who are starving or died at age 40 from cancer and it puts things into perspective. Brush it off and move on.

I might not notice if anyone hit my Pajero, and if they did I probably wouldn't care.A young learner pulled out on me a few years ago - I drove over the front of his car,it lifted the Pajero off the ground and pushed it sideways. The kid and his mother were so upset I said don't worry about it....I just have a small dent in a door and guard.Although I did get the guy who backed into me to pay for the repairs to the front guard - I was directing him back, when he still kept coming!

I don't see the point in pouring a lot of money and anguish into a motor vehicle - they are there to do a job for me.

Worst case scenario is they pay for the damage, and that's that. As for hidden cameras, there were none in the parking lot...the cops checked with management.

Very true.

Happened to me a couple times actually. I had an '08 Outlander last year (which I sold off), and what seemed to be an SUV rear ended me in a mall's parking lot when it was just 3 months old. Insurance covered it, thankfully, as there was over $700 in damage.

Prior to that, some woman scratched my '07 Grand Marquis from the right front door all the way to the back when backing up out of a parking spot in her Tahoe, whilst I was in the vehicle. She just looked at me and drove off, leaving me to boot the $200 repair bill.

Main reason I was being sensitive is because I buy all my new cars in cash and when you dump stupid money on something, it just feels bad to see someone damage it and walk away without a word...even if it's years down the road. Just find it shameful that people cannot do something as simple as apologise, but hey that would be a perfect world. Things do go wrong, although if somebody confessed to their wrong doing and apologised, I'd appreciate it more than them paying for the repair.

I know what you mean. I drive my vehicles to the ground before I consider replacing them, so cosmetic appearance is just as important as it being mechanically sound. Minor things don't bother me, but when there's a huge dent in the wing, etc. that's another story.

sorry to hear that . We've had the same bad experiences in parking lots . When the better half worked as an employee for a supermarket bank she got many dents from shopping carts . Didn't make a difference with strategic parking , the carts always seem to find the '99 COROLLA . The first large dent it received was to the passenger rear door and rear quarter panel . Took it to a body shop and was told by owner not to fix it because it would occur again . Sure enough it did . Got to point she couldn't look at it without getting peeved , so stuck it in local paper and sold it to elder couple . Lost nice chunk of money on that sale thanks to all the dents . One time while driving through mall parking lot I spotted 2 young teens roll a cart towards a parked car , so I raced to the cart in the car , stopped the car , and jumped out to grab the cart just before it hit the vehicle . Meanwhile the teens were laughing and ran off into mall . Now we park on highest point in a parking lot away from other vehicles . If carts are nearby , I'll gather them up and wheel to a place below the car and secure them so not to possibly hit our or other cars . So far the strategy has worked . Will grab carts that look to be a danger to other vehciles in parking lots , because we know the stress it brings . That way they won't have to discover the kiss of a roaming cart .

It varies from country to country. That might sound quite cheap as far as living standards in America are concerned, but here that's a heck of a lot of money to repair something like this:

That's pretty bad.

that's a nasty dent . There must be global guides / handbooks being circulated for how to be an inconsiderate driver . Just seeing that pic makes me angry . Hope all goes well with the fix .
