The car lot was 'so confident' of the mechanical soundness of the car that they drove it over to the Saab mechanic for me. Mechanic said there was hardly any oil in the crankcase when it arrived. My plan now is back to square one.

So, your bidding was contingent upon PPI ? Can you do that on ebay? By the way, please cover your name and address from that printout before posting to a forum!

i've had a couple winning deadbeats on ebay, so in short, yes.

You are planning on trying to get your money back right? Lesson learned on sight unseen, otherwise looks like you ended up with (sorry for the phrasing) but a real POS

saab engines are great especially the 1990-2000 or so we did maybe 4 in the past 10 years at mt engine shop and they were all high mileage if i remember correctly. Sometimes their anti theft coded radios forget the code but otherwise they run for a long time and dont seem to rust like all the rest.. I like saab very reliable car

Two things:

1) Are you referring to my actions as a "winning deadbeat"? If so, why?

2) The only money that traded hands was $100 for the shop to drive it down the street to the mechanic, and $128 to the Saab mechanic.

I'd say that seller's discription was a little optimistic based upon what the shop found.
At least they took it to a real shop and not one of their buddies.
Based upon what the shop found, I think you can honestly decline to complete this transaction.
This sounds more like a $500.00 project car for someone who knows Saabs, can source the parts cheaply and who will do everything themselves.
Based upon what the shop found, nothing sounds really daunting to repair, but I doubt that you'd want to try to drive it all the way home or pay what you bid for it.

When you bid on a car on ebay, and you win it, you need to pay for it in full, otherwise you are a deadbeat bidder.

Ebay keeps track of this, and will terminate your account for doing this a number of times.

I've sold on ebay for 15 years now, so I have filed the deadbeat bidder form several hundred times.

The proper way to do it is to arrange an inspection of the car before the auction ends.

Honestly I've bought cars sight unseen like this before, but it was from major dealers, and the cars were more money. SO, I got lucky each time and had a decent car.

Need to be very wary of buying cars from out of state with such a poor description, unless you are someone who wants to tinker with this thing and wants a project car.

I believe that ebay also requires an honest discription of the item being sold.
The seller's discription in this case could be considered less than honest based upon their having written that "everything works" when that was clearly not the case.
If they had written that this was a fairly beat up old car that apparently hadn't been driven much in some time, that would have at least been honest.

its pretty cut and dry that the winner should pay for and enjoy his new vehicle. he is not covered by ebays purchase protection which is clearly spelled out here: http://pages.ebay.com/motors/buy/purchase-protection/index.html

since i'm a somewhat nice person who can appreciate grey area situations, you can just be a deadbeat non payer once or twice a year and ebay wont do much against you.

If the car passed with flying colors, and I then chose not to complete the transaction, deadbeat winner would be an accurate classification. As is stands, the car was not listed accurately [ by a longshot] in the auction. I have communication with the seller stating that items in the inspection reports were not issues. It was leaking oil so voluminously through every seal on the engine, that hardly any crude was in the crankcase when it pulled into the Saab mechanic.

I too have been selling on eBay for 15 years. I too report deadbeat non-paying winners. I take my auctions seriously, and have moved $54k of product with 508 100% positive transactions.

Ideally, I prefer to have the car inspected prior to bidding on the vehicle, but the auction was in the last 12hrs of the cycle when I discovered it, so it was not possible. I cleared it with the seller prior to bidding via email and phone.

I'm a lot of things. A deadbeat winner isn't one of them.

Okay, be that as it may, seller still has a common law duty to accurately represent the item offered.
Whatever rules ebay may decide to create do not change established case law.
Were that the case, the ebay auction system would be no more than a heads I win tails you lose proposition, which is clearly not the case nor is it the intent of ebay.
If the item is misrepresented, the seller would have no legal recourse.
I also know of no effective way in which ebay could actually enforce a ban against any individual either.
Too easy to register as a bidder using any name you'd like.

No need to be afraid if the previous owners(s) properly maintained the car. I put 318,000 miles on a 2000 9-5 Base model and it was still running like a top when I sold it.

And since this is BITOG, only run full synthetic in this car. 5W/40 is my preferred oil for the B235 engine (I currently own three Saabs, two with the B235 engine) and whatever name brand oil happens to be on sale, Mobil-1, Shell Rotella T, Total Quartz Energy 9000, and I have recently seen Delo on sale in this weight.

With or without PPI? If the airbag light can be fixed and driver seat leather can be repaired cheaply, you got a one heck of a deal man! There are few places on the internet where excellent support for this brick is available. I am sure you will be able to fix this beauty. Frankly, I am jealous with your purchase.

I am also excited and can't wait for the upcoming GHT reincarnation :-)

Nice brick! I loved my wife's '91 744T.
I bought my '02 off eBay. A smooth transaction and no complaints...
