So, Fram filters...why the bad rap?

You be the judge, but I will not run another Fram on my Ram anymore.

NAPA Golds work well on my /6 (no start-up noise).

Please learn the difference between your and you're. They are not synonymous.

Fram Tough Guards are amazing filters. 99% efficient @ 20 microns and larger rated up to 10,000 miles with silicone ADBV and thick can and paint.

You can hate on the fiber board end caps all you want, you obviously do not understand the engineering function of the end cap and if you did you would see that some filters use resin or no caps at all and still they do their job, which is to force the oil through the media, which they do just fine.

Rated to 10K miles.

So I've been told for years to not run a Fram, they are garbage, majority of bad motors in the junkyards have Fram filters, yada yada. So I've always ran something else, ie "Anything but a Fram" lol. Was running PureOne for a while, now using Wix.

So lately I've wanted to know more about oils and filters, so I joined this forum. And lo and behold, everywhere I turn I see people praising the Fram TG and UG. So, my assumption is that they either made their stuff better than they used to, OR their cheap regular filters are garbage but their higher grade filters are good. Majority of people don't want to pay extra for their filter so they use the cheapest one.

I'm not a Fram fan, but if it's proven they have built a better filter I'm not afraid to try it. I've been told for years that Pennzoil and Quaker State will clog your engine up, but everywhere I look on here people tout the Pennzoil conventional as a top-notch conventional, so I have a fresh fill of it in my Turbo GTC w/ a Wix filter, trying it out.

Basically poor quality control and cardboard end caps and you can do better for same price. If the cardboard end caps were so good, they would use them in their more expensive filters.

The fiber end caps cannot be used in Ultra filters due to the need for a flange to capture the pleated wire behind the media. Honda, Subaru, Bentley, GM, Nissan all use fiber end caps as original equipment.

Um, yeah, and COST has nothing to do with the OEM decision. Remember the Pinto fuel tanks?

Nice lookin' filter ya got here...

Funny how that's the point you address and not the fact that you are attacking an end cap material that is inferior yet some filters use no end caps at all. I don't even care what you think, i know what i know, but i worry that other new members will be passing on more bad information.

What is the OCI of this filter? For all we know it could have been water damaged vehicle with tons of mileage on the filter? I can post pristine pics of Fram filters too whats the point?

It's from a BITOG thread from last year. It's a TG. IIRC, about 5K. Happy?

Lies, since its obviously and Extra Guard, you can see the orange paint, and i doubt it was 5k, since its very wavy, which doesn't happen in 5k under normal conditions.

What about this orange can with 20k on it and perfect pleats?

Extra Guard/Mileguard with 235 hours on it

You may find that funny but the 3500 americans working at FRAM and Champion do not. Every time an uninformed person reads that and then buys some offshore mad filter your "orange can of death" doesn't get any funnier.

It gets the job done for most applications, but there's no margin for error. Higher than average oil flow- it may collapse. Extended OCI- don't even bother.

Sorry Motorking- I'm sure Wix marketing hurt Fram somewhat, but I was there and saw the reputation get earned fair and square. Wix just pounced because they saw an actual weakness in the product. But hey, don't get me started on Wix and the lousy specs on their synthetic media filter, either! :-)

That said, the Fram Ultra filter line is a superb product. In today's market, I'd say the base-model Fram is the only one to be avoided. By the same token, I avoid the base model of *most* car parts- I don't buy the cheapest tires, the cheapest bulk oil, the cheapest belts and hoses, brake pads, rotors, ignition wires, spark plugs, nor the cheapest shock absorbers.

Plain and simple- If your filter did collapse, the bypass valve didnt open. If you do not know why, your still at risk.

I want to share an interesting post regarding this very topic. I am acquainted with the guy that started the thread and I will say he is a very credible source (taken with a grain of salt considering I am now into my second post here!!)

I would be very interested to hear what Motorking has to say in regards to this, if there is any truth to it. If there is, I think it's safe to say Fram is capable of a quality filter.
That, OR perhaps Am$oils standards aren't quite what they would like everybody to believe

What, do you think Amsoil own a filter engineering center and manufacturing plant, they are an oil company. You would be simply amazed at the number of brands that are highly touted and held up as being "way better than FRAM" that are indeed, made by FRAM. we have been making oil filters for 80yrs, Champ for 70 yrs, we have so much talent in engineering between the two companies. WIX just lost 100% of the CarQuest business to a filter the boys at Champ designed that blows away the old WIX CQ Blue and Red.

By "Ford OEM" I assume you're referring to Motorcraft? True Ford OEM filters, the ones they put on the cars at the factory, are very different and are not sold to the public.

The Ford OEM filters are all made by FRAM. The Ford MC version is not the same as what the car is delivered with and is not made by FRAM

I don't believe anyone here hates FRAM.

And now that most of the FRAM marketing folks seem to be gone from this forum, some honest opinion may return to this discussion.

Still very much on this forum and I challenge you to show me one thing I have presented that is not fact. Your correct, I do not share my opinions, only facts based on engineering.
