Was at a local Walmart today, saw 5 qt. jugs of Pennzoil conventional with SN symbol. Is Pennzoil the first to get the new licensed bottles on the shelves?

Is it actually an API 'donut' that says SN, or does the label just say 'meets or exceeds the requirements of API SN'?

Big difference between the two. SN-spec 'donuts' shouldn't be on the shelf yet.....

API donut on back with SN, starburst on front, it's official. I should've snapped a cell phone pic.

Does not surprise me it is appearing now. Officially goes in to effect on October 1 and that is only three days away.

And yes, I do believe they were the first.

Checked the PENNZOIL 5w-30 and 5w-20 conventional and it's still the SM . Considering a go with the P.Y.B. S.N. 5w-20 for the 2008 YARIS during the winter .

Price was $12 for 5 qts. No difference.

I don't think Pennzoil had to change their formula much to meet SN.

Just a feeling I have, it's a pretty advanced 'conventional' oil to begin with.....

I contacted Castrol a few months ago about Edge meeting the new spec, I was told it already met the spec. The only thing that was going to change was the label. I would suspect that the same was true for Mobil, Pennzoil, and the other major players. JMO

If you look around here there is a pic of an AMSOIL label with SN - Resource Conserving

If you are not finding the labels on the shelf it likely because they are holding back till old stock is moved out.

Were the SM stuffs marked up a little to hide the difference? Does anyone know what grade or symbol were back in 2002 and 1992? I am waiting for all the obsolete SM go to on sale so I can get them for my not-yet-obsolete cars.

Motor oil execs are probably laughing all the way to the banks staring at us from above and see how we all get giddy up over a letter change.

Marketing terms are great, they sell more products than good R&D:

Energy Conserving
Resource Conserving
High Performance
Extended Protection
Sludge Protection
Varnish Cleaner Power
etc

I honestly can't see the mpg difference between 5W20 or 0W20 or even 5W30. Of course, defenders will say my driving style is too erratic to judge any difference. I'll stick with M1 X0W20 unless I can find Valvoline on sale.

2002 = SL
1992 = SJ (pretty sure I had a 1992 it said SJ/SG on cap, so SH or SJ.)

API Donuts tended to say Energy Conerving 2 at times as well. On car engine cap, if not bottle of oil. Starburst = on 10W-30 or 5W-30 grades of almost anything.

My 88 Dodge Aries calls for SJ :O It's running along great with PYB

And no I doubt the prices will change any with the simple letter change, they will simply "mix it in" hopefully rotating the stock to get the older stock out :)

I know when they changed the PYB design months back, there was a time at my local WM where the "old style" bottle was in front, and the "new style" behind in hopes people would by the old bottles before the new re-designed bottle (with likely the same formula....lol).

Ultimately it all depends on the stocker, I know of a couple assosicates for WM and Target that say they only rotate consumables (food....).

As a stocker that used to "Fill" and "Stripe" and also "Front" the displays at department store AND make end-caps and not having special hours to do so.. I can tell you that IF the supervisor is telling them that... then they .. arent doing it right.

Countless times, ive "Fronted" the shelves at WM oil, as a customer.. Because it doesnt look right, and that bugged me.

Wouldnt it be something if a WalMart supervisor was a BITOGer.

I actually did community service with someone that was a Walmart manager that was also sentences to Community Service. One say a week, could do an extra day on the weekend of you wanted. Most people chose weekends. This is for 10-day sentences to SLAP and stuff like that. WM manager. Go fig.

So what did we lose with this change in API labeling?

IIRC the SL oils were considered superior to their SM replacements due to a reduction in antiwear additives in the SM formulas to eliminate catalytic converter foulding.

I'm sure we are taking it in the shorts again, just don't know how.

You may lose a few additives here or there but the industry says the end producys would ne better. Imo who cares we change it way to often to benefit from any of it.

I might be able to try some of this SN rated oil in 3 or 4 years.. you know, when my current stash is used up.
