Smoothest engine oil in your opinion?

My 1994 LS400 with more than 240k miles had many different brands, synthetic and conventional, all in 5W30 or 10W30 weight and I never detect any differences in smoothness from any particular brand, they are all the same.

The other car is 2000 E430, it was much quieter with Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 (with 1/2 qts MMO) compares with Mobil 1 0W40 which is recommended weight for that car. The car has Synpower 5W20 now and it is not as smooth nor quiet as it was with Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 (with MMO).

The third car is 2004 S2000, no differences with any brand or with conventional or synthetic.

I rarely notice any difference between oils, but when I drained the 10w30 Mobil 5000 out of my 351 Windsor in my boat and replaced it with Delvac 1300 15w40, the valvtrain seem quieter for the short run during winterization.

With all the talk of different oils related to engine smoothness,has anyone ever noticed oil pressure differences with different oils? Mine:

Royal Purple-highest oil pressure and maintains it consistantly. Pressure never drops to a low level,even maintains it at hot idle. Stays around 70psi.

Valvoline conventional-pressure as high,but goes down just a hair as the oil heats up,but stays high. Stays around 65psi.

Pennzoil conventional-pressure as high as Valvoline and maintains it just as well. Stays around 65psi.

Mobil 1-Last time I tried it,oil pressure stayed really low and as the oil heated up,my pressure went down to 10psi on a hot engine and lower on idle. Freaked me out so I drained it and put it in my lawn equipment.

The roughest has been Mobil 1 0w20. The smoothest has been Rotella 5w40. Even the Mobil 1 0w30 seems a little rough in my 4-Runner, but the performance is appreciated and I am ceratinly having the MPG meter report better mileage than in oils past.

I felt that Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 was smoother than Mobil 1 0w20.

So far, I am loving GC in my Passat and it may be the next fill for my 4-Runner.

I also have tried them all, and in my vehicles, Q-synthetic and Havoline DS (5w20) are both smoother than the rest.

It really depends on the engine and the weight.

Mobil 1 is really smooth in my Jeep. It seems a little quieter than Amsoil, but Amsoil XL is buttery in my wifes Mazda.

Truthfully, the smoothest oil, would be any of the above in a 50 or 60 weight. lol.....not that I suggest that.

I also found GTX to be really smooth.

I have also found that Valvoline synthetic is #1 for engine smoothness.

That in mind, I have never tried products like Redline or Royal Purple in my car or my dad's car. I haven't used GC either.

I guess I've been cheated. In 40 years of driving and 38 years of working on and being around cars as a profession, I've never known one oil or another to "feel" any different than another. Assuming I had the correct oil for the application, that is.

Quaker State Horsepower Synthetic is ultra smooth and quiet in my wife's Subaru Tribeca H-6. Dare I say it is quieter than the previous fill of Pennzoil Platinum. Probably in my head...

I disagree with you two their,I have noticed a difference between oil`s (mostly @ higher rpm`s).And the difference is mostly between Synthetic`s and conventional oil`s.

For me and my mazda6i, it goes like:

1) Royal Purple
2) Motorcraft 5w20
3) Quaker State 5w20
4) Pennzoil Platinum 5w20

I'm surprised by the PP because it does not handle the cold (0 to -5F) very well at all. Although, it could be the MMO in the gas, too. This is the first year my car hasn't started immediately upon turning the key. It hasn't been bad, though. I think the longest it took was like maybe a full second to fire up but it has been longer.
