Except for the smaller sets, you can't buy a TV that doesn't have the smart features anymore. If they get outdated, just quit using them and plug a Roku or whatever else in. I'm sure they add minimal/no cost to the set as the app providers probably pay to have their app preloaded on the set.

I haven't found the menu or setup on the new Samsung 4k to be cluttered at all.
And youre assuming that your $30 device will not encounter the same issues in the future. Chances are if the TV will, the processing power in the little device will be weaker and be useless sooner.
Or both will be usable into the future. They may be...

$1,000 TVs are cheap throwaway devices also. I bought a 60" Sony back in June, it developed a line in the screen and Sony wasn't even interested in repairing it. After 100 phone calls and emailing pictures of the TV to them, they just picked up the TV and claim they'll be sending me a refund.

My Panasonic Remote app for iphone does have a trackpad section on it. Works just like the trackpad on the tv remote.

Our TV remote has a keyboard on the back of it but I find it much easier to use Google Chrome with the free Google Cast Extension to cast to the TV. After you cast it you can either shut off the computer or do something else with it as the TV takes over what you have sent to it.
You can also cast from a smart phone, etc.
