I like using the smart function of my TV to watch documentaries on Yotube, and also for watching movies on Netflix, however, using that stupid search box with all the letters and numbers in it that you have to select with the up, down, and side arrows on your remote is a royal PITA! Is there any way a keyboard can be used for this, and if so, how?

The technology is improving. I have an Amazon Fire unit, and it has voice recognition. Just push a button and speak into the remote.

A huge improvement over what you're putting up with.

my samsung can usea keyboard, but haven't looked into the details... usb probably

There is a free extension from Google Called "Google Cast". I use it from a cell phone, tablet, computer, etc., using this extension for Google Chrome.

You just cast the You Tube video to the TV, once you cast it you can shut off the device you used, or use it for other purposes. Works great.

See the link below.

Link To Google Cast

I find this the easy way to watch You Tube Content on a Smart TV, Roku, etc.

I was just going to say this too.

Actually, I believe my FIL used a wired keyboard through the USB port on the TV. Some have two or three USB ports these days...

go to youtube settings on both your phone/computer and TV and select "pair TV" follow instructions. Then select the video on your phone and watch it on your TV.
If you "sign in" you will have a permanent link instead of it being temporary.

I use Apple TV and the keypad on my Iphone to type in searches. I don't really care for the smart TV part of my TV, I find like you do it to be clunky to use. I only use it for Amazon Prime because Apple and Amazon are competitors.

Apple also has airplay so I can stream games from other peoples accounts via their phones. Its how you can watch football without cable TV.

I enjoy watching youtube a lot of the colleges put a lot of presentations on their that I find interesting.

You can Youtube directly on a smart TV? I need to get one of those. Still piping streaming content in via laptop and HDMI cable. Although my cable provider has Netflix available over the coax so I can hit that w/o laptop and for search function have to use what sounds like the exact same alphabet grid search selector via the handheld remote.

The interface on the smart tv's is poor at best.

Buy a 35 dollar chrome cast, and stream from your ipad/tablet/laptop to the tv.

I actually bought a 200 dollar laptop that I plug directly into the tv with an HDMI cable, and use a belkin touchpad keyboard to surf from the couch.

This. The smart TV software out there works. Barely. Get yourself a Roku, Chromecast, Amazon FireTV stick or similiar.

If you really want to stick with your smart tv, my smart tv allows me download an ap on my smart phone that can be used as a keyboard and to search for content. If you have a Samsung tv look for the Samsung TV ap, Vizio TV look for the Vizio TV ap on your phone, etc.

I just got a brand new 4k TV, and we have used youtube for our preschooler to watch some educational stuff, and we also used Netflix. The interface wasn't clunky, though a qwerty keyboard would be faster/easier, as would a wii-type finger-pointing interface. But thats a tiny bit of speed, nothing else. Works great.

Most smart TVs will let you cast to them without any need for a Chromecast. Since I have a Chromecast and a smart Vizio, I can select which to cast to. Just use your phone as the remote.

Does your phone have a trackpad so you can move the cursor around on the TV ?

Why do you need that to find documentaries on YouTube?
