Smart phone recommendations

I suggest to read consumer reviews of any phone you are interested in. I always look at the negative reviews and see why people don't like it. As far as Motorola, I was thinking about the Z Play before the Samsung. The G4 looks like it gets good reviews and Best Buy has it unlocked for $140.

Yeah, I like the way the G4 operates and feels. Brother has one and recommended it or a Samsung J3 or J series

We have two Nexus 5X phones through Project Fi. Several years old now and they have been faultless. My bill is about $24 a month and I'm well pleased with the phone and the service.

AS far as I am concerned the Alcatel Idol 3 is the only phone to own IF you have ATT/Cricket phone service.
The link I am providing pretty much sums it up and the negatives posted, well, every review on EVERY phone has some negatives, you select on what works for you. Also this review was done a long time ago, I dont agree at all with the multitasking "sluggish" comment and think maybe because the review was done before the Android updates.

Alcaltel Idol 3 - click here

All one needs to do is google = Alcatel Idol 3 reviews

I am just posting for the people who want a phone that performs like an overpriced $600 phone for the cost of the IDOL 3 at $100 ... dig deep enough into review you can find a comparison or YouTube on the sound of this phone as the best in the industry vs a new Iphone

This is not to discredit anyone who owns/rents or has a loan payment on a phone that cost more then $100.
We all do what makes us happy, this post is just for those who want to pay $100 for a phone, that works, acts, and in some ways exceeds (battery life and sound) the performance of over 95% phones on the market.
Knowing full well, its a phone and internet device that will do what you need it to do.

:o) Happy 4th!

Got Alcatel Pixi 4, brilliant value for money, my wife has the Motorola G4 and again a great phone (but cost me twice the Alcatel, both new). Zero stability issues, good battery life. If you are a heavy user I would go the G4 user, if you are a lighter user an Alcatel will be sufficient. Alcatel has noticeably superior idle battery life, G4 is much faster at loading apps up, a little quicker in general use. I use my Alcatel for GPS navigation (Google maps or TomTom) in the car and its perfect for that whilst listening to Spotify or Google Music at the same time.

Ugh.. I'm glad these threads are here. My ~$400 iPhone SE took a dip in a hot tub yesterday. It was in there a good 5min or more before I discovered it. Dead as a door nail. I was able to pop the SIMM card out and resurrect my old iPhone 5c with it, but I'm looking for a budget Verizon smart phone, ideally with HD Voice/ Wifi calling, but I could do without if I must.. Feel like such an idiot putting my iPhone into the pocket of my swim shorts. I'm pretty lucky in that I've never even cracked a screen on one. My old ones look new. Luck ran out...

I'm happy with my iPhone 6 Plus. It works great. I'm on year three with it and will replace after four years. Apple phones can be long lived. Sorry if this post isn't helpful to the OP

Thanks for the input, I'm just seeing what's out there after Apple.

I will be replacing my LG Lucid smartphone( VG 840 or something like that )that is 6+ years old probably this weekend or early next week. It is time as it is obsolete and I am running into issues with things like my bank's new app not working with it due to an out of date OS. Plus the battery doesn't hold a charge very well anymore and it is just s-l-o-w as heck compared to the new generation of phones.

I am planning on going with the Samsung Galaxy J7. I am waiting for the new 2017 version due out the 28th vs a 2016 model. Slightly better resolution, a better OS, and a couple other small differences. Price is supposed to be under $250 but I wager it will be closer to $300.

Based on my needs and use I just can't justify what these new high end Android smartphones like the Galaxy S7 and S8 cost and you couldn't give me anything from Apple. $800-$1000 is NUTS. I use it for calls, texts, checking the weather, occasionally email, and minor internet usage for things like directions or looking for a nearby restaurant, gas station, etc... I don't live on my phone for personal pleasure or business as so many do. I don't play games, music, or take tons of photos with my phone; I only use it for the basics.

The J7 seems like a great phone for the price. Everything I need. It is also good size unlike my Lucid which is small. Hard to text with my vision issues. Will be much easier on the J7.

I hear you. The J3 looks like a decent inexpensive one as well. As does the LG Stylo 2, but it's really large. I always see a lot of recommendation for Motorola here. I'm not sure I know anyone with one.

Just sharing my recent experience. I went with the Samsung J7 V prepaid phone. Got it on eBay through Best Buy for $139+ tax. I moved my number from the Verizon Wireless account I've had for years, to the $40/mo Verizon prepaid. It comes to ~$43/mo with tax for the 3gig/mo plan. Saves me about $20/mo from my old post paid plan. You have to use this phone with Verizon's prepaid plan for a year, or $75 worth of prepaid is spent before you can use it for any other pre or post paid service.

I've only had iPhones prior, but so far I love this Andriod Samsung. To me it's fast, great call quality, love the 5.5" screen, but it seems HUGE compared to my little iPhones. Still kind of fumbling through the screens on the Driod, but it's nothing I can't get used to.

Now to get the last two lines from my Verizon postpaid to something less $...

I bought the turbo droid 2 back in 2015 so it's almost 2 years.

has
1. turbo power charging (ups the power to the phone) through microUSB charger or
through the wireless stand - charges about 85% in 1 hour.
2. unbreakable screen - it's actually a thin flex piece of plastic
3. has GSM/UMTS interfaces - works worldwide (via Verizon) - tested in 3 other countries
4. has been auto-updated to Android 7 - later ones have even longer runways

Have used Galaxy phones that drain between lunch and dinner (I eat often, too), apples
that take all night to charge like their watches, and chargers that are only available wired.

look at the other Motorolas that have been available since 2015.

Greetings-
I personally would avoid any phone brand that uses the Android OS with their own user interface overlain on it ("skins").

This results in lots of bloatware- two of everything. Who needs two photo albums, two clocks, etc ? I'm talking about you, Samsung (among others). And you can't get rid of it. It consumes ram and storage.

If you want/like Android, get a brand with "native" Android, like Google Pixel.

In some respects, you get 3 sets. One from Android, one from the phone manufacturer and one from the carrier. If I bought a Pixel for Verizon, it would have Verizon khrap loaded on it.
