Slowly improving oil consumption

- 2003 Hyundai Tiburon
- 2.0L 4-cylinder
- 260,000 miles (owned the last 100k; first owner neglected tf outta it)
- (used to run Mobil1 HM, now 5w40 EuroForm)

Last oil change was at 258,000 on the dot. I've been keeping an eye on the dipstick obviously and to my pleasant surprise this is what we see.
Car used to burn 1qt/1,000...then 1qt/1500...then (as of my post here on Aug 24, 2023) 1qt/1900.

We're at 2,000 miles now.

That version of the 2.0 engine was almost bullet proof willing to bet it never been changed.

IIRC he/she/they mentioned switching to 5w40 from M1. He/she/they didnt mention what weight, but perhaps the euro oil led to the reduced consumption???

Don't let the oil get this low on the dipstick. These engines operate best / consume less / last longer, keeping the oil on the Full mark.
This 2.0 is a Generation 1 engine. It was the best group of engines Hyundai produced to-date. The 2.0 we drive (in my signature) is a Gen 3. The 2020 model I have is the worst of the recent Gen 3 group. Low tension rings are junk in many of em'. They may literally come apart. Some of the 2020 2.0 MPIs don't even make it to 35k.

We just turned 30k in our 2020 Early Edition (April 2019 born date) and HPL just went into it a few days ago.
Our 2.0 will have the industry's best 5w/10w30 blended PCMO oil in it when / if she takes her last breath.

When I first got the car at around 100k ago I just used Mobil1 HM 5w30 (10w30) but quickly swapped to 10W40 and ran that for tens of thousands of miles.
Upon doing the valve cover gasket (posted here) there was some heavy varnishing from the previous owners neglect. I used some engine cleaners over the years (seafoam, berryman B12, even HPL EC) https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...parkles-did-3-000mi-make-a-difference.369807/ None of those cleaners did much of anything but they did help a little. The HPL EC was the last cleaner I tried.

Recently started using Mobil1 5w40 EuroFormula for the last 12,000-15,000miles and stopped using cleaners. The oil consumption from 1qt/1000 to 1qt/2000+ was not immediate but gradual. Ironically this isn't the first Tiburon I've had with oil consumption that's been cured albeit [https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/oil-consumption-has-stopped-tiburon-v6.355315/ this] example is much more drastic (consuming 1qt/600 @ its worse.

I love that you are seeing improvement in your Tibs oil consumption, especially after lots of neglect over tens of thousands of miles. Glad to see diligence and effort pay off.

I doubt we will see that kind of improvement with any maintenance regimen (premium oils included) for many of the modern and notorious engines Kia and Hyundai produce today, or in the last 15 years. My '17 Sonata and now '19 Sportage are great (bad) examples, both with the Theta II 2.4L, suck down oil almost as quickly as gas. At their worst, borh consume about a quart every 500 miles.

@MrBaumTastic yeah IDK What to say about modern Hyundai or Kia. I've seen some really high mileage examples but ever since the GDI and Theta motors I'm not sure if I would get another one as a daily.
New JDM is much more sophisticated than the cars of the 90s/00s but those cars were more basic and more bullet proof.

Thanks. Goal is to I guess drop consumption to zero. But if I can get it to where it's 1qt/3000 I'd be happy.

Regardless gonna push this car to 300,000mi at least.

Update since I can't edit the OP with an update.

Kept driving til 2,300mi and the oil level was a smidge lower but still within acceptable parameters. Probably could go 2500. Topped it off with 1/2 quart.

When you said you stopped using cleaners you mentioned a few, but B12 and HPL EC go in different places, so my question to you is, why do you think that helped? And what prompted you to start/stop in the first place? As someone who uses cleaners in the fuel system I can hazard a guess, but I wanted to ask you.

Also why do you think the mobile one is reducing consumption? What other factors could be at play do you think?

@MrBaumTastic Well it might be controversial but I put the B12 & Seafoam in the crankcase. 3oz for a 4qt system; less than suggested to be safe. And that is what got the oil consumption to improve a little bit over time. I stopped just due to cost for the cleaners it's already a high mileage car and I change the oil religiously at 3k miles (just a habit)

I don't think there is any other factors. Just the cleaners and Mobil1. As I don't drive the vehicle any different than I used to. Still the same city:highway ratio and same speeds/acceleration. But I think due to the more OEM approvals I do think that the new EuroFormula > HighMileage from the information I gathered here.
I'm not trying to promote Mobil1 or give them credit. In fact, as soon as I'm done with my bulk Mobil1 I plan on using Valvoline's R&P and to do a before/after of some very varnished engine components:

Changed the valve cover gasket a few days ago. Car runs fine but consumes oil. This is what under the valve cover looks like at 224,000 original miles.

Oil changes every 3k with Mobil 1 Full synthetic or for a whole I was running Shell Rotella T6.
Kinda disappointed it wasn't cleaner. Thoughts? And what do yours look like?

give Valvoline restore and protect 5w-30 a try, it may clean up the Mobil 1 varnish and help free up the rings a bit Rember thicker may not always be better.

Aiming generally / more-so with ILSAC / API / GF6A / SNPlus / SP / Dexos 1 users seeking multi OCIs varnish relief. But not necessarily exclusive to these brands.

HPL brand No VII and Performance Plus ...'maybe' Supercar also.

I bought both Performance Plus and No VII. One boasts Ester count and the other PAO. So what did I do?...... I blended both 50-50. Member OVERKILL may know more Supercar's Ester count. But since Mobil-1 Supercar announces high esters for their's, I suspect HPL Supercar has high Ester too.

Based on extended readings of threads / posts from this website in recent years. I hope this helps members here seeking varnish relief without added 2nd party supplements / treatments. Just don't expect varnish to be gone in one OCI. Give it multiple .... perhaps 3 consecutive.
Not intended for those with varnish so thick, a painting scraper tool is needed......lol

I will once I run out of Mobil1 5w40 Euro. I bought 3 jugs from Walmart online...and someone goofed because I got 3 cases (9 jugs).

But based on Part2 of this thread https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/improving-oil-consumption-part2.389740/ Mobil1 EuroForm has proven to be quite effective. I'll pull the valve cover off again once I use the remaining EuroForm (4-5 OCI)
