I've read about SLOB but I'm unsure of its use. I know it's high in Zinc and Phosphorous. Is this an oil stabilizer like Lucas? I know the Lucas product doesn't contain many additives. I'm just wondering what the use of SLOB is...I bought a bottle at a local closeout store near me. I'm not really looking for a thickener or stabilizer but if it's a good preventative product, then I may utilize it on my next oil change. Thanks!

Ok, so if I added it to 5w30, it's not going to affect the viscocity?

The zddp and calcium of SLOB will help stabilize the oil by providing anti acid function. The zddp and calcium also will provide added antiwear. Calcium also detergent. Maybe other functions.

I ran Durablend with doubled zddp (about 2200 ppm) for 9000 miles and the UOA was acceptable, no red flags.

Oh the viscosity, yes. Let's look at the blending equation:

Say one bottle SLOB and 4.5 qts 5 or 10w30. I think SLOB was around 28 cSt and the oil is around 10.5 cSt.

log x = 0.1 x log28 + 0.9 x log10.5

log x = 1.0637862

Anitlog x = 11.58207

So your oil will move from 10.5 cSt to 11.6 cSt, which is what 10w30s typically should be and likely were in the old days and some of the better HM oils are now. Since typical 40 weight is 14 cSt and 40 weight does not start until 12.6 cSt, you will be fine with adding the SLOB.

TallPaul, you're my hero. Thanks for the info. That's what I needed to know. I live in a humid environment (Biloxi, MS) and Ford calls for a 5W-20 but I'm going with a 5w30...I didn't want anything thicker if I add this additive.

Why aren't you using 5W-20?

Well, I wanted to switch to synthetic and AutoZone had a five qts of Valv SynPower and a Fram TG filter for 17.99, so I went with that. They didn't carry the 5W-20 in the SynPower. I made a post before about this and asked opinions and the answers I got about the switch were that it would be an acceptable one that wouldn't cause any problems.

Do you have some advice or information about using the 5w30 rather than the 20? What would the effects be? Admittedly, I rather new to the world of oil analysis.

I forgot to mention that my vehicle is a 2006 Ford Fusion 2.3 I-4 manual. Most of my mileage is city driving.

In his hot climate the 10w30 with slob probably is fine. Maybe outside of warranty with the additive, but it's not like a ton of zddp. Maybe half a bottle slob is enough for the small crankcase he has.

TP's my hero, too. Wait 'til you ask him about BIG oil filters for Fords
