Lucus oil stabilizer in an older Ferrari

My 88 Ferrari Testarossa just had it five year major service performed by one of the highest rated mechanics in the country. He uses mobile 1 15 W 50 in these vehicles but also around a qt of lucus oil stabilizer. I was a little surprised by that because I’ve always heard that it actually does harm.

During the service, the rear main seal was also replaced and unfortunately, after a few heat cycles, it started leaking again. I am taking it back to him to have it replaced again. He will have to drain and refill the engine oil. Should I ask him to omit the Lucas oil stabilizer?

He swears by it but I’m not so sure. If it’s not actually hurting anything, I probably won’t say anything to him. The ratio is around 15 or 16 qts of mobile 1 to one quart of Lucas.

One to 16 quarts is a thin ratio. That stuff is fantastic in engines that burn oil, old engines or engines that are started infrequently. If you take a motor apart that has had that stuff in it you can tell that everything is coated with a fine film of what looks like grease. Leavr those parts out and the do not rust. I think it’s great but would not use it in a low milage engine that gets run frequently.

There are no anti-wear additives like zddp or phosphorus, no friction modifiers like moly or boron, no detergents like magnesium or calcium.

These are present in your motor oil. The lucas is diluting those add packs and making the oil a weaker blend.

Leave it on the shelf for the less knowledgeable/uninformed customers to use.

He swears by it, but I wouldn’t use it.

The Lucus (sic) is a bunch of thick group one oil. Great for a worn out, oil burning, iron block V-8 in an old pick up truck.

Absolutely the wrong thing for your car.

If this guy is such a great mechanic, why has his repair on the rear main seal already failed?

I assume just horrible luck. He is making it right though, including paying for a transport to return it to his shop. You guys have convinced me, I’ll request that Lucus be left out.
Here is the skinny on LOS

Unless listed all are 'Zero'

Lucas Virgin
TBN - 0.1
Visc - 615.3
FP - 435
Calcium - 3
Magnesium - 1
Phosphorus - 4
Zinc - 2

This is what is in this stuff, from what I have read on this interesting Board, if your engine is running fine, you do not need this stuff.

I wouldn't use anything but Lucas OS and Doc oil filters.
