slits or holes in a oil filter

Hello everyone, and did a oil change on a vehicle (ENTERPRISE CAR SALES OR 109 safety point cert) and vehicle had 6k sincelastoci. Anyways it had a HASTINGS oil filter, and I cut it open, but looking down the middle; filter had slits like champ labs and Super Tech filters. Which would you prefer: slits or holes in filter? I honestly dont know if I would mind either one, as I have 2 Super Tech filters to use yet, and CHAMP LABS filters at my work havent cost anything problem wise other than one filter that leaked at the seam. Let me know your thoughts and opinions and advice please.


I dont really see any REAL problem with slits, as long as they are cut or punched the correct way/pattern.

Doesn't really matter if they are designed and manufactured correctly.

As the above posters said, it really doesn't matter. Be it either holes or slits, as long as it provides filtered oil flow to the engine, then it is ok.

On a side note, one may believe that larger openings or whatever is better. Not so fast. Like air intake in most cars, the engine will only pump oil at a rate that's needed. If the holes or slits provide for a higher flow rate than is necessary, than what good does it do? Oil filters that meet OEM specifications meet the flow rate demanded. Slits or holes doesn't play a large role unless flow analysis can be done and either shape is proven to flow at a higher rate than the other shape. That is of course, if the engine is capable of pumping oil at that high of a pressure...or is designed to do so.

So yes. Both are fine. Supertech oil filters have been trouble-free for me. I have been using them for years because they meet all OEM specifications for my vehicles. And since I also get other stuff at Walmart, might as well save a trip and buy the filters too. They work as well as the Toyota OEM filters made by Denso. I have used K and N oil filters too, mainly because I thought the nut on the end was neat. However, they are kind of pricy when I can get the same performance for my needs at a lower price. Honda OEM filters are everywhere at work; great too. Production is outsourced. Some have knocked them for cheap construction and I won't argue. However, from a business standpoint it is good; if it isn't broken then don't fix it.

Nevertheless I am confident than Supertech will protect your engine well. I use them with confidence in mine.

Thanks dtt004, think I will use the other two ST 7317 oil filters I have, and when I change my oil to Pennzoil conventional super bowl weekend; will try to remember to take my digital camera with me to take pics. Currently running a WIX 51356 filter. I cant argue with the ST price of 2.64$ here in western PA wal marts. As said at my work, every CHAMP LABS filter I have taken off any rental vehicle, we havent had oil related problems using them.

The company that services all our standby generators in New England, some up to 250 kW, uses Hastings filters. Ever since they installed an incorrect part number on a generator at one of the sites I'm responsible for, they don't try to put anything over on me. I have no issues with Hastings.
 
Thanks for the reply RF Overlord. Havent ever heard much about HASTINGS honestly. Was at a auto parts store closeout(this was a 1950'S-60'S era parts place. I have like 200 boxes of HASTINGS piston rings. Buddy of mine used some of them on engines so far without problems. I have heard the b.s., bad rap and etc on hastings but never any real problems. The filter I took off the car, looked fine in my eyes/opinion, no damage or nothing unusual. May go get the filter and cut er' open tomorrow just for fun!

Remember that the oil pump is a "Positive Displacement" pump. It tries to put the same volume through the filter & engine until it hits it's max pressure relief point.

So, if the filter's center core hole or slit design did cause more resistance, the oil pump's outlet pressure would just increase in order to pump the same oil volume through the filter.

No difference in oil flow rate due to more filter restriction will be seen until the oil pump has hit its max pressure point (controlled by the pressure bypass valve in the pump). Also, if the filter's core or media is too restrictive, the filter's bypass valve could also open up.

So yes, any filter designer should know all these aspects of the design to ensure the filter is not too restrictive to flow in the application it is designed for.
