Slight overfill on MMO and oil

I am planning to add half a quart of MMO to my oil soon for the last 1000 miles on my current OCI. On the dipstick it shows the oil level slightly less than halfway between "safe" and "add". It would be about halfway on the hash marks if my oil dipstick had hash marks. This is where the oil level always is when I have about 1000 miles to go, and it never goes much closer to or below "add". I have a 4 quart sump, if that matters.

I figure it's maybe half to 3/4 of a cup below full at this point. If I add half a quart of MMO will it overfill the total sump oil/MMO amount and cause problems? I know you can go slightly over on your regular oil fill and it should not be detrimental, but I don't know how that applies with MMO's properties.

I guess if I really wanted to be precise I could remove my oil filter and drain it and the small amount of oil that will come out of the block to compensate for the MMO. I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

I have been reading up on MMO added to oil for the last week or so. MMO has given some good gains since I started adding it in my gas, and I am very excited and getting impatient about trying it in my oil. Any info is greatly appreciated.

You should be just fine. In reality you'll probably be about half a pint over, don't sweat it. Even being a pint over won't cause any problems. Let us know how things work out for you.

I wouldn't worry much, but then again, a bit less mmo would be fine too.

This question really depends on the design of the engine, but most engines can have up to 1/2 qt or more overfill. Don't overfill if you don't have to, but 1/4qt or so normally won't hurt anything.

Numero Uno reason overfill may be bad, depending on specific engine: Oil may foam up due to crankshaft and slingers thrashing through "standing" oil in the crankcase. Foamed oil does not pump or lubricate well.

Good point. Best way to check is shut the engine down pull the dipstick and look for tiny bubbles. I've yet to see them being a pint + over in anything I've owned from 4-6qt sumps. But if you're concerned check.

Just add 1/4 quarts MMO then check the oil level after start engine and run for 1-2 minutes. If it is below full then add another 1/4 quarts MMO, if it is at full level then don't need to add any more. Usually, 1 quart is the quantity between full and add on most dipsticks.

I added a pint and drove about 12 miles running around town after work. I let it set while I was in a store for about 15 minutes, came out and checked the oil, saw no bubbles on the dipstick. Level was up even with the "full" line. The oil still looked brownish-tan, no red tint to it, but it was at night under a bright parking lot street lamp. It didn't appear thinned out either. This is not normally how I check my oil, I always check it here at home when the engine is dead cold after sitting overnight. I think that's the best way to get the most accurate reading. I think half a quart is an ideal amount for adding MMO to my oil as a cleaning agent and at 1000 miles prior to the next oil change is the best time for it.

Sounds good. Half a qt for 1000 miles is OK, you could even run it longer if you like. Half a qt isn't going to tint clean oil much, and oil that has some miles on it won't be tinted much at all. You notice a change 1000 miles later when you drop the oil, depending on how much junk the engine had in it. I'm staying tuned! Good luck and Happy New Year!
