Does MMO burn away?

I have been wondering lately what my course of action should be. I followed some advice here on BITOG about adding 1 qt of MMO to the last 1000 miles of an oil change then, replace a quart of oil with a quart of MMO with the oil change. I am doing this to try and help with some oil burning.

Now, since I have used 1 less quart of oil and have replaced it with MMO, will I need to add a quart of oil about half way to my oil change? Or does MMO not burn off in the engine? My oil burning consumption was about 1 qt per 1500 miles.

I would imagine that it will flash off. Thing is, if your vehicle is burning oil, you should be watching it anyway. Perhaps you can educate us further!

Since you have an oil consumption problem I would check the oil more often. Also first time users should check their oil more often when adding MMO. MMO does thin oil slightly, and aids in cleaning up an engine.

The good news is if the rings were sticking and causing oil use MMO will help free them up. I have a slew of PM's from guys who noticed reduced oil consumption after using MMO. Keep an eye on the oil level, any top up oil you add, just use oil and not MMO. HTH

Ok will do, I have been checking it more frequently now. I am only 400 miles into the oil change and the level seems to be about where it should be.

So I guess I will just be adding oil when needed. BTW I am using Pennzoil Platinum. That and MMO should be a pretty good combo to clean things out.

I am thinking that the combination of Pennzoil Platinum and MMO will be cleaning things up, once everything in the engine is clean you might not have anymore oil consumption problems if all you had were some dirty rings.

Yeah i think that is probably the problem. I have a 98 corolla with the 1ZZ-FE engine with the notorious oil burning issue. Many have said its a problem with the rings.

When I first used PP and MMO, I lost about 1/2 qt pretty quick. Now 3 OCI's later I have about 1/2 qt of MMO in there, and the level hasnt changed, so I do not think it necessarily flashes off.

Some engines use a little more oil with MMO some don't. If sticking rings are a problem, once they are freed up the oil use usually becomes less or stops. Worn rings, valve guides, or bad [cracked/broken] stem seals are another story.

Agreed - I have 3 vehicles that I have now used 1 full qt MMO as part of the OCI - for 3 consecutive OCI's on each - none of my vehicles used any oil on a 5000 mile OCI before and none use any now.

BTW - I am mixing Pennzoil conventional with MMO and have been very pleased and intend to stay with it.

I think what you were loosing was probably the MMO, my guess is that it was soaking into some junk in your engine, maybe it was in the rings, or somewhere else in your engine. I also think since the MMO is thin like water it just gets into areas and cleans where the oil cannot get too.

I have noticed on my 2 cars that during the 1st and 2nd OCI with MMO in the oil that there was some oil loss, maybe about 8 to 12 ounces or so, now on the 3rd OCI with MMO in both cars there is no oil consumption.

We have to remember that PP also has some cleaning properties too, so all of the credit cannot go to MMO.

On the 1st OCI using MMO in my Mom's car there was an 8 ounce loss of oil 1000 miles into her OCI, I topped it off and it was fine for the rest of the OCI, no oil consumption, everyone's experience using MMO in the oil maybe slightly different because we just do not know how much junk is inside of our engines, some maybe cleaner or dirtier than others.

So far on this 2nd OCI of MMO in my Mom's car there is no oil consumption to speak of.

I run 15,000 km/10,000 mile oil change intervals with Fuchs Titan SuperSyn and Mobil 1 0W-40. I substitute a litre for a quart of MMO and none of my vehicles use a drop.

I've been using that combo for 3 years. Appears to be a good one.

I have been using MMO in my oil now for over a year, just wondering with the MMO added to your oil do you notice that the oil comes out darker when you do an oil change versus when you drained the oil that did not have MMO in your oil.

I was also wondering if your car ran differently with the MMO in the oil, was the car more responsive, did it start easier.

Good question, why not ask on the MMO forum? Or email them? I don't recall reading anything about Turbo applications there.

That's a great question, I have always wondered how MMO in the oil would hold up under high rpm's, meaning in the 4000 to 6000 rpm range.

I have had no problems with running MMO in my oil, but most of my driving is off idle to about 3000 rpm's.

Pure MMO is kinda thin and volatile. We should expect loss when using it in an engine.
But something happens when mixed with engine oil and used in the crankcase.
It simply dose not seem to burn off appreciably in a healthy engine. Sure, some have loss, but not anywhere near what you'd expect.

I've not noticed the oil becoming darker with MMO, but I've been using Pennzoil conventional and MMO since my truck was practically new. Most people attest the darkening to the MMO cleaning.

As to if it runs differently, it's mainly more quiet. I don't notice anything else.

For me - I added a pint in the last 1000 miles of an OCI - it severely darkened the oil beyond what it was (same for all 3 cars) during that period.

For the next 3 OCI's with a full qt of MMO - the second OCI (after the first 1000 mile run) the oil again darkened fairly quickly, the 3rd much less, and by the fourth (the one I am on in all the cars now) it is darkening very slowly - much slower than what I observed before I began using MMO as it is just keeping with with normal carbon generation.

Of course, this varied slightly with each of the cars as the Expedition has about 74k on it at the time (now 91k) I started, darkened much more than the other two that had only 10k and 20k on them when I started. But I was amazed that even the 20k Mustang GT I have saw noticeable cleanup via darkening of the oil, the 10k F150 saw less, but you could still tell it cleaned up some carbon, but pretty much got it all during the first 1000 mile end of OCI run.

As for running improvements, I run MMO in gas every tank and 1 qt in the oil, , I have observed maybe a little more pep, but definitely smoother idling/running, and a much quieter overall engine. I know these are all anecdotal, but I really can hear and feel the difference.

My observations mirror yours Jax. The difference with MMO for me is most evident in the winter, cold starts are much easier, and there is no ticking, or tapping when MMO is in the oil. It definately helps with cold starts, especially when I go up North toward Lake George and Lake Placid.
