Any vehicle with an SS badge better be fast,so no,not a sleeper. And honestly, they aren't fast. They launch ok,and I will admit I was surprised being pulled on by one but by the end of 2nd gear I was even, and by mid 3rd I was by him.
They are peppy though, but calling car with a super sport badge a sleeper is like calling a mustang gt a sleeper. The gt badge gives it away. Or R/T,would that be considered a sleeper?
Just sayin

Right but it's a Cobalt, a basic econo box. One step up from an Aveo. Speaking of labels kind of reminds of what Ford tried to do with the 1984-86 Mustang SVO. What a flop that was.

The rare as hen's teeth Cobalt SS/TC sedan with the sedate body package qualifies. I've seen exactly one, and it wasn't showy or flashy at all. I could put up with a cheap cardboard interior for that engine and suspension tuning.

My good friend has one - that car fast & has super tight steering. I was suprised!

That is true, but you can peel off a logo and have certain people fall for it.

My father told me that people did that as far back as the 1960s. They would buy a Chevy SS396 of some kind, and the peel the SS emblem off, and put 283 emblem where the 396 emblem was.

Yes, just the exact diametric OPPOSITE of what the ricetards do nowadays (with their GTR, Type R, R, Si, etc. badges on cars that NEVER even had those features

Yup! Lets make a slow car stand out and try to look fast!

I've always wanted to guy a grand marquis, pinstripe it, leave the original hubcaps on and regear/supercharge it.

That'd make for a lot of fun at the dragstrip

I think the difficulty with sleepers is that the owner has to have some genuine mechanical and fabrication skills. The best sleepers aren't the ones that are either known to be fast or known to have much potential outside of maybe a core dedicated group.

Most shadetree mechanics are good for following instructions on how to follow an established upgrade path. Not so many are handy with a welder or are capable of building their own manifolds for custom turbo setups.

One good example I can think of years ago I came across a normal looking Chevy Cavalier while driving down the interstate. At the time my car was certainly faster than the average Cavalier, but this one happened to be turbocharged... not expected.

One of my friends built a BMW 2002 with a home brew nitrous setup. Talk about surprising people...

Kids have been putting SS and Z28 decals on their V-6 Monte Carlos and Camaros for years. And M badges on a BMW 325. And V12 badges on a Mercedes S420. And Cobra emblems on their V-6 Mustangs.

"Ricetards" can be found in marques of any continent.

The Neon was a bit of a sleeper to new guys at autocross. Especially since it has an automatic, and a mazda3/civic/whatever has got to be faster than a Neon...
I did get a bit of a wake up call on my first lapping day though, seeing what the combination of actual HP and straights do on a track.

Quite true, BUT, it is MUCH MORE prevalent/obligatory within the faux 'fast and furious' crowd.

I'm not sure what you mean by this statement. Are you strictly associating that crowd with imported cars or just the type of person? The act of slapping a performance model badge on a vanilla variant doesn't seem to be specific among any one brand or national origin.

He's saying it is far more common with people of the "fast and furious" mindset, which does indeed revolve around import cars, usually Civic's (Honda capitalized on this with "Civic Nation"). I would agree with him that there is certainly a disproportionate number of "ricers" who flock to these cars, adorn them with [censored]-cannon's, massive body kits and "Type R" and/or "V-TEC" badges and run around like they are the fastest thing on the road.

That's not to say it doesn't happen with other marques. It most certainly does. It is common to see "M" badges on entry-level BMW sedans (look, it's a 318 M3!, LOL!!!), Cobra badges on V6 Mustangs.....etc. However, it has been my experience that there are more "riced-out" Civic's than anything else on the road.

That might have been true for a couple of years, but that certainly isn't true now.... that scene has been dead for quite a few years now.
