Today, I went to the new Auto Zone near me and when I looked at the oil, I saw API SL rated "Valuecraft" motor oil in 10W30 and 10W40. The label said "For vehicles up to 2004" and the store is brand new so I doubt it is old stock. At 1.59 a quart, the price seems a little high especially when SM rated Coastal oil is only 10 cents more, but for those who want SL for its higher zinc content, it looks like it is still available.

To my knowledge, SL is rated up to about 1998. ANything after 2000, is SM. Sounds like a marketing scam, of some sorts, yes, because it odes have higher zinc contgent, for lubrication.

For the reocrd, coastal is not really good oil, its labled as recycled oil: ( i had use coastal ATF+3 in my transmission,, for 2 years, and 15,000 miles, even my mechanic told me, it wasnt looking too good; (

My 2005 makes no mention of SM, recommends SH/SJ/SL, prefers 5W20 full-time for fuel economy, but will settle for 5W30 and 10W30 when 5W20 isn't available, and in average temps of 80-90F.

On 0W30 Castro now, but will soon start eating my stash of old-formula PP 5W30 and the 5W20 PP from the 2-4-1 sales to the tune of 7500 mile OCI. Gonna take awhile, especially since I wanna go long-drain on Amsoil after the warranty is over. 70K miles to go..

Marketing an oil for cars built through 2004 suggests that at least Coastal does not believe the new SM oils are that good for such cars. As for me, I take some zinc. Can't hurt, may help.

I've seen test results where a high zinc HDEO produced more wear than a low zinc SM/GF-4 oil in a particular engine. In short, adding zinc to any oil doesn't guarantee lower wear in all engines.

All else equal (viscosity, base oil type, etc.)?

If one was 15w40 HDEO and the other was GF-4 5w20, obviously not.

Uhh no. My 2002 Camry's oil cap says SJ or newer; co-worker's brand new 2007 Camry's oil caps says SL or newer.
