Folks:

I had a biopsy done on small spot on the back of my neck. It came back positive for squamous cell carcinoma. Cell structure indicated it was "invasive". Dermatologist did this yesterday. Tissue was removed all the way down to the muscle. If this doesn't get all of it I will need to see a "neck surgeon" (her words).

Wish me luck.

No, they excised the entire area. Having a big scar is a nonissue for me. I just want it gone.

That looks like it will be tough to sleep!

It's tough to drive. I have to be careful when changing lanes because I can't turn my head all the way. Feels like I'm going to rip the stitches out.

I had one on my shoulder blade that took three times to get rid of it.
Lucky for me I was dating a nurse who worked for a dermatologist.
I didn't see the changes...
Sending positive vibes your way. You will be fine!!!

I've never smoked, I don't drink too much (wine only, never liquor), I exercise regularly, I control my weight, etc. In other words, I take care of myself. Long distance, hardcore, competitive bicycle racing was a big part of my life - but I never used sunscreen.

Wow dude, wishing you the best of luck with your recovery!

I had a co-worker years ago who had the same procedure done, but on her forehead.
Hers was much worse, especially while it was healing.
Not only did she resemble the bride of Frankenstein with black stiches, she'd refuse to wear a patch to cover it so every once in a while it would start oozing pus.

true story

Guess that was a Mohs surgeon and confirmed the margins right there in the lab. SCC can metastasize in the head & neck case - so do they have any image (Contrast CT scan etc) work planned ?

I know these things from personal experience (many removed, radiation, chemo) ...
