No, the oil in your link is packaged completely different, I don't think it's the same stuff.

That is definitely a SOPUS jug.
 
Well, I'd been eyeballing the STP for quite a while. A search revealed very little info until now thanks to the PQIA. The VOA posted by the PQIA on STP was so strong I had to try it, and it even comes from my home state of Missouri!

Anyway I snagged a bunch of the STP 5w30 today for $2.25 a quart. Now to get it into a crank case. I plan to give it a run and hope to do a UOA on it too. I have noticed here on BITOG we are awash in Mobil 1 and the like UOA's but there's very little for oils like these for those of us who are value orientated.

I hope to get this accomplished and it will be my contribution for other BITOG'ers like me who are not doing to run expensive synthetics.

What kind of OCI would you all be most interested in seeing on the STP? Around 5k perhaps? If I run it in my Jeep I'm limited to 3k due to warranty restrictions at the moment.

Checking the analyses on PQIA's site proves Mobil Clean 5000 5W30 was a stronger oil than the Mobil Super 5000 5W30 that replaces it. Mobil Clean 5000 had one of the highest TBN's of all the conventional SM oils they tested @ 9.0, lowest volatility, lot of calcium... it just looked really nice. Wish I would have hoarded a stash of it before it went away.

You're basically saying the same thing about all Valvoline oils then, and you are wrong: You are trying to base value on what basic analysis can 'see'. Instead of being insightful yourself and remembering that not all additives show up in metallic-based add packs.

On the other hand, it's far better to examine how they perform in real world application. Valvoline has done well, IMO, and is a fine major oil like most other major oil brand names.

I got it at Dollar General as well. We have one right around the corner so it's handy and prices are good. The register routinely spits out $5 off $25 or more coupons for "Super Saturday", the most recent of which was today. We buy stuff there all the time, all I needed to do was buy $11 worth of stuff I'd buy anyway, add 4 quarts of STP and bingo the STP is $2.25 a quart with the $5 off. I actually redeemed two of them today, so I've already got 8 quarts of 5w30. Kind of like an instant rebate!

I have used the same trick to get Pennzoil from them for $3.25 a quart.
 
On the top of the PQIA page is a carousel showing "Consumer Alert" oils. Only one met the lowest viscosity within the grade. The other 30 and 40 grade oils were around 2 - 3 at 100C. One was at 6. They all had essentially no TBN, nor detergents. Many were heavily contaminated, and dirty. It seemed these are mostly labelled as multi-grade oils but are in fact (mostly) unformulated, base oils with no VII.

It wound be interesting to see if we can find people who have used any of these in their cars and Not had their engines blow up.

My point is that very thin unformulated mineral oils were used in many IC engines (cars, planes, trucks) for many years with success. Yet people are at odds with the thinner, most heavily formulated, multi-grade oils of today. They think that their engines will blow up if they use a 20 instead of the "recommended" 30 grade oil. Worse yet are those still recommending the use of a grade or two thicker.
