My sister is looking for a new five or six passenger safe suv that is good in the snow for around or Under $30,000 maybe Hyundai,GM or Ford she keeps her vehicles for about 8 years on average then either trades them in or gives them away. I like Hyundai because of the warranty which means i don't have to be bothered fixing them but their prices are not so reasonable these days. Any ideas would appreciated.

fyi hyundai's warranty on the radio, battery and some other electronics is 2 years. Also a ton of "wear items" have 12000mi warranty.
What about a Subaru outback? 25-30mpg its definitely 5 person though. Not much in the 6 person category without going minivan.

The CRV is the better car, but Toyota will stand behind their product a lot better - even once out of warranty. Take your pick.
She does not want a Honda she had one and had three transmission problems the first two years all had to be towed. i talked to her tonight and i think she decided on a Hyundai santa fe or Chevy traverse.
She had a number of high end vehicles including Mercedes and range rover and a BMW all were money pits she wants a regular low key good running drama free suv in her words and she also wants a v6 .
As for a subie we are seeing engine problems pretty early in some of them.

Our CX-5 is absolutely fantastic!
I had a drive in a rental Dodge Journey. Well actually in its rebaged Euro version Freemont. Quite like it to be honest. This was my first contact with an American car since late 90s and things definitely changed.
I am one for the Chevy Equinox or GMC Terrain 4 cyl AWD. I love the solid, quiet operation. Feels more grownup than many in it's category.

Ugh, no, no, NO. My sister in law had a 2010 GMC Terrain 4 cyl. It constantly had timing chain problems and really bad oil consumption. These are COMMON problems with this engine. Total garbage. I hate the Equinox too. We have a fleet of them at work and I unfortunately occasionally have to drive them. Cheap interior, awkward drive by wire acceleration, slow, uncomfortable seating position, most horrible back seat I've ever sat in. It literally feels like a wooden park bench. My butt was actually sore after sitting in it for a few hours. In the "cars you wouldn't drive even if they were free" thread, the only vehicle I listed was the Chevy Equinox. And it is literally the ONLY vehicle ever made that I hate that much.

Right now you can get deals on a 2014 Ford Edge. During the 18" snowfall we just had in Chicago, I noticed the a Ford Edge keeping up with me during a drive thru the worst conditions. I was driving my 2001 Blazer in 4Hi. So I'd say it's capable, and according to TrueDelta, it's been reliable.

I had a Terrain, my experience was the opposite. I had no problems with it and I enjoyed driving it - that was one solid vehicle. You closed the door and you felt like you were in a vault it was so solid and quiet.
I know several people with Equinoxes too, and they all like their vehicles and haven't had any issues.

Yeah, same here! Those I know(and I know quite a few like 9-10 folks) all love them and no problems. The worst problem IMHO is outward visibility! But, a very solid vehicle!

I have a 2013 Equinox, while not my thing is it is very solid and quiet. On long trips it is very comfortable. My wife wanted it because it made her back feel the best. We drove a RAV-4, CRV, and an Edge. None of those were as quiet and sure didn't feel as solid. While it is true some of the 2010s had timing chain issues that has been fixed.
Mine does not use a drop of oil 4000 to 4500 mile oil changes.
Now at 30,000 miles, so it is young.
The only two people I know who have complained about them are on this board and they never actually owned one. Once in awhile a bad one is sent on. Sounds like what happened to exranger06's sister in law.

The only "SUV" type vehicles I like are the Nissan XTerra and Chevy Tahoe. Not sure of the price though.
Yeah, I would be very hesitant to even consider a Mitsubishi with their possible exit from the U.S. market. I used to be a Mitsu fan as I had great luck with them years ago but I don't think they're making the same product today.
If she wants a smaller mid SUV then I think the Santa Fe Sport with the 2.0T is a good option. Basically, the same gas mileage as the 2.4 but with 75 more horsepower. Personally, I think there's a lot of good choices in the category and it might come down to a couple features / capabilities that one has over another.
