GM makes a lock lube, but said you could also use Mobil 1. So I've always used an old bottle of Mobil 1 5w30 since the early 90's. Dip the key in Mobil 1, then insert into all your door, trunk and ignition locks - works great. It also makes a great box fan lube for dying fans that are starting to seize up. You can get a few more years out of them if you soak the bearing with a few drops of Mobil 1.

I have never replaced a key due to it wearing down? It makes sense that there can be wear when using the key but replacing a key every 10 years doesn't sound that bad. Unless your key has a chip or one of those keys that has the key fob attached it is usually under $5 to replace.

Try the cab industry sometime, and you'll see keys wear down.

Agreed. I can see that there but I don't consider wear and tear on cabs to be even close to the average car driver.

No, it shouldn't be. Even my LTD with a lot of miles fared better than the taxis. OT, it seemed that the Ford ignition/key combos of the day fared better than the GM ones. Of course, the keys wouldn't be the only things that would wear, the innards would wear, too, which could be so much fun.

So one of the things I do at work is build lock cylinders. When I build them, they come with a little tube of Gredag 741 grease that I liberally coat over the tumblers and springs. I have taken cylinders apart to get the key code that are 15+ years old and that grease is still in there.
