Hi everyone,

I have an issue with my physical key. My car battery was dead and I was locked out of my car.
While trying to use my my physical key, it would go in about 80% of the way but not go any futher.

Since I am unable to fully insert the key, i don't know if it would turn or not.

What would be the best course of action?

Thanks for your help

If the key won't insert fully into the lock cylinder, don't force it or try turning it. Doing so will likely damage the key or lock tumblers.

I suggest trying the following approaches:

1. Try a different spare key, if available.

2. Spray some lock lubricant oil into the lock cylinder and try again.

3. If that fails, try the key(s) in the other door(s), hatchback, or trunk to get into the car.

4. If all else fails, call a mobile locksmith or AAA/roadside service to unlock your door with a jimmy pick.

5. If you are mechanically knowledgeable and have the proper tools, you can try hooking a battery jump pack to the the starter (+) lead and (-) chassis ground (from underneath the car) to allow the power door locks to work with your remote key fob.

I don't have any.

I will buy that today, try it out and report back.

I had to call road assistance to unlock my door yesterday, but I am trying to solve the key issue in case it happens again.
Roadside assistance took 5 hours to get to me. So, yeah...

Questions:
Would making a new key help? Is it better to contact an automotive locksmith or a mechanic?
If the ignition lock cylinder is affected, would the locksmith typically be able to repair/replace it or should I see a mechanic?

I am not really mechanically inclined, and I think I don't have enough ground clearance.

The dealer can make a new key off your vin number.
That would be my last resort. I have considered that option.
I don't know if it's just the key or the cylinder that is the issue.
Have you tried using the key on the passenger door?
Only the front driver side door can be opened with a key (not even the trunk can be opened with a physical key)

I suggest that you take the Sentra to a good local locksmith. They should be able to determine if it is a worn key, worn tumblers in the lock cylinder, or both. They can fix it and it will be less expensive than going to the Nissan dealership.
