My Parrot has been very ill over the past week, after a few vet visits and medicine he is slowly getting better but i am sick as a dog. Fever 103f, runny nose, real flue like symptoms.
Does anyone know if its possible for humans to catch something like this from a bird?

I think i need to take a few days off because i cant even think straight.

I`m thinking you probably caught a bug of some kind. I`ve been the same way for 3 days now,and everyone at work is getting it.

That's what i am hoping. The last thing i want is to give it to the little guy even if i got it from him.

Trav, it is time for you to go see a DOCTOR. JMO

Yep i called my primary care doctor and the earliest they can see me is next Wednesday. Their advice is take some contac and call us on Monday if its not better.

Zoonotic diseases are not generally very common. The one that that I can think of between parrots and humans is psittacosis (Chlamydophila psittaci). I think it's usually not lethal but it still needs to be treated with antibiotics. A blood culture test can identify it.

If I had to wager, I would guess that you just caught a human-infecting virus.

Either way, get well soon!

Wow the vet mentioned something like Chlamyd...something? The vet did a swab on the little guy for that, no results yet but he is on antibiotics.
Geez i hope i haven't picked up something really weird.

I think i will go to the emergency room when the wife gets home.

Are you pale around your beak? Sounds like ornithosis. Nasty bug, part virus, part bacteria. Usually only humans with a weak or weakened immune system will catch it. Ornithosis usually clear up by itself over the course of a few days (in humans, to birds it's often lethal). How you got parrot fever is more of a concern. You must have ingested some of your parrot's fecal matter.

sort of...

my uncle used to breed and race pigeons, guinea fowel etc. etc. and was also a cleaner at a high school.

Spent every day at work scrubbing graffiti off walls, and every evening tending to his birds.

One day he felt right to die, and nearly did.

Apparently the solvent fumes stripped a fatty protective layer off his lungs, which was then attached by some pigeon born pathogen, that went straight into his system.

No more birds, no more solvents.
