I also have a couple of friends who have or had kids in a couple different US Nat Security Intel agencies/sectors.
I assure you that the poster above is 100% correct, there were ways someone could listen with a POTS phone that was "hung up".

I have had several times where I would be at work and search for something there (industrial maintenance stuff), maybe an electric motor, for example. I have Never searched for an electric motor at home on my laptop there.
