Sick and tired of the "listening"

Whether you realize it or not it’s been going on longer than you think. Before the cell phone boom your house phone connection (Cold War era) could recognize key words and flag you.

If the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) phone is hung up nobody is listening unless that phone has been modified.

A few years ago one of my brothers moved to a new location in Maine and I asked him for the new address, a while later when I typed the first number of the address in google maps the complete address with his name popped up. This after a brief phone call.

I worked in the POTS industry for 11 years. I also have a couple of friends who have or had kids in a couple different US Nat Security Intel agencies/sectors.

I assure you that the poster above is 100% correct, there were ways someone could listen with a POTS phone that was "hung up".

Surveillance HAS been going on forever. Just not this invasive from private companies. Heck, grocery stores were tracking what you bought every Saturday, they just didn't know your name, address, etc.

So? What was your exact position? My experience with telecom techs is that they know how to do exactly what it is that they were trained to do, whether that be splicing cables or chasing dialtones. It would be a rare telecom tech who was trained on the internal workings of a phone, because it's been probably 40 years since Bell leased and repaired phones.

I also have a couple of friends who have or had kids in a couple different US Nat Security Intel agencies/sectors.

Three things to note about FBI/CIA/SS/NSA/"special ops"/etc guys:

1)They aren't supposed to tell you anything classified (they can go to jail for that)

2)Because of that, they have a tendency to make up BS to keep you impressed

3)You shouldn't even believe half of what they tell you

I've run into several guys like this, they are all the same, big story tellers trying to impress people.

I assure you that the poster above is 100% correct, there were ways someone could listen with a POTS phone that was "hung up".

No, there isn't. Unless the phone has been modified, the only part of the phone connected to the line when it's hung up is the ringer. You aren't going to be listening to anything via the ringer.

I actually understand how POTS phones work. Ever used a butt set in monitor mode?

Heck, grocery stores were tracking what you bought every Saturday

Kinda have to keep track of what's bought in order to keep the store stocked.

I did not read all six pages, so if someone already said this, forgive me.
I have had several times where I would be at work and search for something there (industrial maintenance stuff), maybe an electric motor, for example. I have Never searched for an electric motor at home on my laptop there.
Sure enough, I go home from work and right away ads pop up for electric motors.

Are you logged into Google (gmail/etc) at both locations with the same username?

No, I specifically do not log into anything in an effort to be as low-key as possible. But, I guess it does not matter.

I use multiple laptops and I do not see what you described. For example, none of my work laptop searches change any of the ads that are shown on my personal laptop. This is despite the fact that they are on the same public IP address since I use both at home.

I do see that searches on my personal laptop change the ads that are shown. I've also noticed that going to Grainger or Zoro's website and looking up a product starts giving me ads from Grainger or Zoro on weather.com (on the SAME machine).

One thing to note, I generally run with an adblocker enabled, except that I had to disable it for weather.com.
