Sick and tired of the "listening"

Big tech you say, try NSA. Of course anybody that said they are recording all phone conversations was labeled as a crazy, thin foil hat wearing idiot back then. It just goes round and round.

Now there is a new bill for all cars to have a breathalyzer, video and audio recording of the inside of your car. But people that bring up these issues as tyrannical overreach, will still be called conspiracy theorists and other names.

Here is one of NSA towers in New York City, they have them in all major cities.

Whatever you keyboard commandos want to call it.

I've known, without a shadow of doubt, that big tech has been listening to conversations through our phones/etc for almost 10 years. My wife and I noticed it years and years ago. It was only a thing or two here and there once every 2 weeks or so.

A few years ago, it seems like most of the low-IQ population started inquiring about it, big tech said "ya ya, ya, ya, Terms of Service, you agreed to it, ha"

Ok, I get it. Whatever. It's a known quantity now. I don't care what you turn on or off, whatever, it still happens.

I'm just sick of it.

I've noticed it has bled over into my YouTube suggestions hard the last 3-4 months. My boss has been talking incessantly about fixing a darn toilet at his house. All these gadgets at HD for this and that, blah, blah, blah. Now I'm getting toilet repair videos on YT. A few weeks ago, my wife had mention TWICE that she wanted to make her some macaroni salad. BAM! For a week, I'm seeing suggested videos on YT for, you guessed it, macaroni salad.

This goes on and on. A few years ago I walked by the frozen pizza cases at Publix one evening. I didn't even open the freezer doors. None. Never touched a frozen pizza. I don't usually buy them and don't usually venture down the frozen food aisles at all. We don't eat frozen food. I was carrying my phone on a belt holster and the camera was on the outside.

Bam! Get home, an hour later, scrolling social media and up pops some ads for frozen pizzas. Never seen them before.

I'm sure some great, highly educated, powerful 32 year old minds that have sat around a conference table "collabin'" at giant companies near and far across the US think this is some out of this world marketing genius-ness going on. Not really. It is more off-putting to me and makes me take notice and NOT purchase what's being pushed through this surveillance.

Maybe this become the next 'boycott' ....

I noticed the same, been going on for a few years.

Not enough people understand how the ad platforms work.

It's all about relationships, relationships, relationships.

Good looking building.

There's no Alexa or other listening devices at our home, office, etc., other than our phones.
My college student employees claim that they have been discussing a topic, let's say new truck purchase, and within a short time they start receiving ads, etc. regarding new truck purchase.............just from talking about it near their phone, not visiting sites about it.

???????

Yeah, that's exactly what this thread is about....

I have a flip phone and leave it at home a lot. My personal vehicle is more than 10 years old. I scrubbed my Fakebook account a few years ago. Don't miss it. No Alexa, Siri, "connected" appliances, wifi, or even Internet at home.

The ads are noticeable mainly when I've been on certain forums discussing certain products, and not just this one. Ads for those products will appear later. If I talk about tires, lo and behold, ads for tire sales. That kind of thing. Otherwise, I don't see the things you're talking about, thank goodness.

1) Why is this such a problem? Just keep scrolling. How do you think social media can be free for users?
2) How is this any different from the nonstop TV commercials? 5 minutes of the show, then 4 minutes of ads.

FWIW, to all the people that are "on the fence", I know a few people that have extremely high security clearances that work on high-security government projects.

1. They aren't allowed to take ANY mobile device, not even a laptop, with them anywhere. It has to stay in their vehicle, which is usually parked a decent ways away from any entrance/fence/gate/etc.

2. They won't talk about anything with me with a phone/device within 20' and exposed. Not even "let's go outside", it's a motion to walk outside and I know what that means, leave your stuff inside.

There's reasons why.... no matter how many things you have disabled on your apps.

I also have a couple of friends who have kids that are/were in the intelligence community in the military/NSA/etc. It's eye-opening to hear what can be done with YOUR phone.....

I don't do TikTok or InstaOunce or whatever but my kids tell me that whatever they talk about, shortly after they will start seeing ads on those various apps.

I notice it mostly on YouTube. Talk about whatever and if there is any sort of product related to it, ads will start showing up on YouTube.

Yeah, I've noticed this for years. For example, years ago, I had never even heard of Benihana (it's an overpriced restaurant) then one day my coworker tells me about it. Well, an hour later I go on my lunch break, and guess what I see on Facebook? A Benihana ad. And that's just one example.
