This week every time I start my car. There is shrieking noise after cranking. The car starts without problem. Should I be worried?
My car is 1997 corolla auto.

Thanks

To add more info.
Is it about the belt? I had timing belt changed 5 year ago when the car about 80K. Now the car has 120k miles.

Is it coming from the mother-in-law sitting beside you? If so, electrical tape applied in the mouth region should solve the shrieking issue.

It sounds like starter nose cone is draging that will make a shrieking noise if itis slow to retract or stays enguaged too long. Belts will normaly stay noisey not just on start up but they can come and go.

May be JohnBrowning is right. The noise goes immediately once the car starts.

How to fix it? Do I have to replace the starter or is there a cheaper solution.

Thanks you all.

Seen kitty lately?

I'd be tempted to just run it until it breaks.

A little screeching can be a wondrous thing.

Assuming that it is the starter (it would have a metal tone to it as opposed to a chirping/squeal that the accessory belt would have) the typical remedy would be to put in a remanufactured unit. Hopefully (and usually) it's not the flexplate/flywheel teeth having issues.

Very few people service a starter drive these days. It can be done ..but the labor is the same ..more actually ..so your costs are about neutral in either case.
