I just watched a documentary on Walmart and how it hurts communities, underpays and cheats employees and undervalues women employees, gets their products from sweatshops in other countries, Gets tax breaks when locals can't, bullies employees etc....

I think I need to stop buying there.

http://www.walmartmovie.com/facts.php

Anyone out there actually work there and have any stories?

They also build gas chambers for the Nazis during WWII, Helped fund the 9-11 terrorists, shot president Kennedy and Lincoln, Killed the tooth fairy, and a whole slew of other completely unbelievable nonsense.

Customers and the local government do more to kill small business. If people didn't shop there, they wouldn't be so successful. You can also thank those large corporations that sell things at a discount to walmart. You know the companies, the ones that you invest your 401K money into so you can be rich when you retire...or poor, which will force you to buy things at Walmart.

I have changed how i buy things, I avoid as much union produced products as possible. My next vehicle will probably be a kia or vw tdi. I've never bought import/foreign but i will be now.

why avoid union produced items?

I think one of the many complaints of Walmart was that they didn't allow unions. I could be wrong though

Rules of the board prevent me from discussing this. But if thats true about Walmart , i will continue to shop there.

The biggest major, and legit - to me - beef with Walmart is that wherever they show up, existing smaller business and other competitors tend to disappear overnight. A second one is their products are largely China made imports.

I buy some stuff there - mostly oil that is made in the US of A (made here or made in the US is my preference) from Walmart because nobody else comes close on oil prices here. Can Tire occasionally does, and I read their weekly flier and go there instead when they have a good sale on oil I like. Oil filters I buy elsewhere from both, as Can Tire's in house brand is now made in China (along with their in house branded tools).

Other things I largely buy elsewhere too, but often a trip through Walmart to pick up one item leads to picking up several others while I'm there, though even then I check the labels first, same as everywhere else. They are not my primary store, in general, but the closure of alternatives has meant they are still a regular one.

These days they are more symbolic of the above than being unique practices to Walmart. They also employ a lot of people and keep them in indoor year round jobs they wouldn't have otherwise.

I don't think of them as the "evil empire" that some (not so much here on BITOG) regard them as. They are more a fact of life today.

Like cigarette maker Altria (MO)?. Since 1/1/1991-5/16/2011, up 1,920% with reinvested dividends and providing a compounded annual return of 15.8%.

I will say this, its sad to see the mom and pop restaurants die down-

Every small town I pass through now, same dumb restaurant chains: Applebees, Chilis TGI Fridays (and so on).... blahhhh

Nothing wrong with Walmart. If some people don't like Walmart , they will find another place to shop. I avoid Walmart due to the long lines and they do have pretty decent selection of goods at an everyday low price. For the record I own Walmart stock for the past decade.

If anything, things have gotten worse. That movie came out in 2005. Since then, recession hit, so what are most people doing? They're shopping even more at Wal-Mart for cheap goods, and Wal-Mart is in turn achieving record revenues and record profits and continues to crush competition even more.

I shop there too at times, mainly because it's just around the corner from me, so it's convenient to be able to find just about anything in one place. With that said, they're not the cheapest for everything, but I'm not about to run around 10 different stores to pick up what I need just so that I can save a few pennies. My time is valuable, too.

I like shopping there and will continue to do so. In fact, I'll shop there more now that I know it irritates people.

I'm heading out now to eat and Chili's and shop at WalMart.

It's good to know you are so easy to manipulate.

Have a nice day.

I used to shop heavily at Wal Mart, but now I don't because I've found other stores (mainly groceries) who have cheaper prices. And the big one! I have even found a 'mom and pop' auto parts store (1 mile away for WM) that sales oil for cheaper! (Some of their prices...$2.19 for Kendall GT-1 semi-syn and for a hard to find oil, $6.89 for Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40, not that I use it) As always, who ever is cheaper on price with a quality products ts my cash.

I've also found that longer lines appear to be normal at Wal Mart and I can never get 'in-n-out' in less than 30 minutes.

On the other hand, I have no problems with Wal Mart whatsoever.

Also, I heard on CNBC this morning that while their 98 cents earning per share beat the street's estimate of 95 cents, that their actual market share loosely based on sales receipts has dropped for 8 quarters. The talking heads said that 'other discount and mid-range' retailers are taking more of their market and high gas prices are forcing more of their customers to stay at home and make fewer trip there.

I do go to buy oil at wal mart sometimes. Why? They have a bigger, more consistent selection than most anyone else, and at better prices.

The downside is that it is slow to get in and out of the store, especially given the lines. The stores are sloppy. The people inside the stores are sloppy, and in one local store, most likely illegal.

I do prefer small regional chains and mom and pop stores. Sometimes they compete, sometimes they cant. Sometimes Ill shop there, sometimes I wont.

But the wal-mart effect HAS brough the country down, IMO, and the rich and poor population of the country are to blame. its not just big business.

I agree with the other poster above regarding the prevalence of chain restaurants. Im not a fan. Sometimes they are OK, but I just find much better food diversity and better overall food at non-chain restaurants for the most part...

Watch it and then see what you think.

We have cut our own throats.

**I wish some ex or current Walmart employees would answer.
