Should I Move To Las Vegas?

I enjoy this forum and the members here, so I thought I would throw this out there. Please feel free to comment.

I am giving serious consideration to moving to Las Vegas. Preferably Henderson or the Summerlin area. What I am seeking is a single-family house to rent in a 55+ community. I'm done with apartments, and, much to my own surprise, I think a 55+ community might work for me. I just want peace and quiet, and privacy. And a two-car garage.

I realize that for more than half the year I will be living in a climate that is only slightly cooler than the sun, but you can't have everything.

Please tell me what I should know, and don't hold back.

Thanks. :)

You could probably rent there for a couple months and try it out, get a feel for the lay of the land. Might be some neighborhoods better than others. Noone there is "from around there" so you'll get a nice (?) mix of America.

After more than two days in Vegas I want to jump off Hoover Dam. Green River, UT is nicer, quieter, and may get its own nuclear plant in the next 30 years.

Don't know much about Vegas, but if you want privacy I would steer clear of the 55+ places. We rented a condo for a year near the beach years ago. It wasn't 55+ but the demographics of the area that most were retired. Everyone had all day to keep an eye on you, and were sure to point out if you got within 15 miles of breaking a rule - whether the rule was real or one they made up - didn't matter.

Renting is a good idea. Having moved to several new places - 6 months is a good amount of time to get the feel for a place.

Believe it or not, I was afraid of that. The last thing I want is to be surrounded by neighbors who spend all day watching me. I've been in that situation.

have some freinds that moved to Summerlin a few years ago. they wanted to live there before they bought a home , which they were more than capable of doing . when i went to visit them, they had rented a 3000sf house in a gated place for $2700 which i thought was pretty good . they are still there

Rent in Vegas is higher than it used to be , but compared to cities like NY, LA , SF and Seattle they are cheap . its why so many people are moving there .

The heats is something you either like or not. I have no issue with it as it dry and most of time in the summer folks are inside in the A/ C . My friend said you know its hot when even the Mexicans don't work in it and they don't roof in the summer.

Go try it for a year , but if you have vices like gambling and women, you may not last long there

How about moving a little farther away from the city like Searchlight or Cal-Nev-Ari?

I'm open to that if there is upside. I'm a city boy, so being in, or near, a city has value to me that it does not have for others. I ask myself: "Would I be happy living I Pahrump?" The answer is: "They'd have to be giving something away."

Yeah Pahrump isn’t my speed either. It’s kind of a dump. I’d rent something for 6 months in the Vegas burbs and see how you like it. The dry heat is appealing to me.

We looked at a "retirement" house in Pahrump about a year or so ago. Every AM radio station seemed to only discuss sports betting.

Gambling and houses of ill repute seemed to be the center of gravity for Pahrump business. Pahrump also seemed to be cold in the winter. Pahrump was a easy pass.

Might the greater Tucson area be worth a look? We love the greater Tucson area. Lots of 55 plus communities. Many bigger city benefits without the big city downsides. Affordable. we were super impressed by Tucson.

I moved to Henderson (southern side of Las Vegas) in 2008 because it was the middle of the territory I was going to cover, and you can get a one-way flight nearly anywhere you want to go. I enjoyed riding dual-sport motorcycles out in the desert...but you have to respect the fact that can kill you as quickly as riding motorcycles on the road and getting run over by a car. It was an adventure, and I'm glad I survived the housing fiasco. stayed 4.5 years and moved to the mountains above Salt Lake City....MUCH BETTER for me up there. Then moved back to the Southeast where I feel more at home. I'd never go back...the only times we ever went to "the strip" was when someone from out of town came to visit. It's just not my idea of an enjoyable lifestyle....too hot too much of the year. Dangerously hot. And the water is drying up. Search for "Lake Mead Bathtub Ring" about that...

And on the flip side, if 2 families moved out our neighborhood would be 55+ and everyone minds their own business. We've been here 6 years with no problems.

I really like Tucson. I will reconsider it. And I am no longer so sure about the whole 55+ thing.

My hesitations are:

1) Tucson is even hotter than L.V. If that's possible.

2) I'm not aware that they have as many nice (albeit tract) houses.

3) I'm not aware that I'll be saving on cost of living.

4) AZ has state income tax. NV does not.

Talk me into to Tucson. I'm sure I will thank you for it.

I'm the opposite.I hate cities! Too much crime, noise all day long etc. plus I want to be able to leave to go riding off road from my house.

What part of LA are you from? Near the beach, where it's cooler, or more inland?

I moved from the Newhall area to Bullhead City ( +10 degrees from LV), but I had spent a lot of time there. Make sure that your "6 month" period includes July & August for either Tucson or LV...
