Any reason why I should not run Mobil 1 15-50 in my 06 V6 Toyota 4runner in the summer when I tow my 5,000lb camper??

The trucks calls for a 5w30 oil is there any adverse effects from running a 15-50? when the truck calls for a 5w30? Just in the summer and towing

It certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but I have yet to hear many stores about the 4.0 dying a premature death on anything. Though, most of my forum wanderings follow the 2.4/3.5 in the Rav/HL and not the BOF SUV's.

Is this something you have lying around to use up? Or are you deciding what to buy? If you have it I'd say use it if its warm out and it's a long trip, shouldn't cause a problem but that is thicker than ideal IMO. If you're deciding what to buy I'd go for a good solid 30 or if you feel the need for thicker oil a 40.

I guess my main fear is working a 30wt real hard or to hard when towing. Years ago my father would jump up one grade (30 to 40wt) when he would tow in the summer and I guess I should have asked is this something that you should still do?

There have been more than a few UOA's on here from when folks are towing with 20 and 30-weights in vehicles, and they turn out fine.

Today's oils are light years better than what your father ran 'years ago'...I mean, they're not even comparable. No need to go any thicker with modern oils.

But there is the 'sleep at night' factor - if you just can't settle with using a 30-weight, then do go to a 40-weight. M1 0W-40 would be a really, really good choice. No need to go all the way to 15W-50.

If you're buying, I'd go Rotella Syn or another HDEO synthetic in the 5-40 weight. Like Addyguy, I don't think you need it, but those would have increased zddp/antiwear and are a robust oil thermally.

No need for a 50 weight, unless you already have it around. The 50 weight will flow less, so things that are splash lubed don't get as much lubrication, and there is less flow to dissapate heat, which will be higher since higher vis=more friction=heat.

I bet there are thousands upon thousands of folks towing with the FACTORY specified oils/weights and no issues.IF there were issues it would be OUT there all over the Internet and or WARNINGS in owners manuals and such.I'll tow and haul with the specified weights anywhere in this country or conditions.
