40 will feel slugish and not necessary. I run GC and does not feel as lively I only run it because of fuel dilute issue that can be a problem with 4.0l especially in winter

5w40 is way to [censored] thick and it isn't even a friction modified oil. The 1gr FE just doesn't need a thick oil and you are gaining nothing from thicker oil with it.

Run a used oil analysis on what you think you want then make your decision. run a 20,30,40 weight what ever you feel comfortable with. My decision was made on a few used oil analysis and help from a very smart man.

IMO, the 4.0 L likes the ASL 5w30 i got in it right now. Lot of folks complain about the motor being noisy (ticking, etc..). I do not have any noise issues whatsoever.

I ain't going to fix something if it ain't broke.

I love the way mine runs and I have run it mostly on tropartic 5w30 but have also ran Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic 5w30 and Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. I really can't tell a difference in noise or warm performance. I have read trips over 22 mpg for the firstr time with 20wt but the engine may just be getting into its broke in point at 22k miles.

How heavy is that camper? That weight may put you into the severe duty oc schedule and if that is 3750 miles, synthetic would not be a good value.

Towing or hauling heavy loads is hard on truck engines. Does the engine have variable cam timing? If yes, go with a thicker 30 weight like Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5w30. If not, 10w-40 will provide extra protection against metal-metal contact in the bearings because minimum ht/hs viscosity for 10w-40 is higher.

The camper is 5,000lbs loaded and the 4runner did a fine job of towing it last year. I ran Shell Full Synthetic 5w30 and sent the oil in to be tested after 5,000 miles but my sample was lost in the mail. I guess the thing im worried about is the 5w30 just to lite of an oil for the high heat high stress im going to be putting it under this summer. This is why I was thinking of something like Rotella Full Synthetic 5w40??

Agree with j. Handle the "stress" with a shorter oci. Use a high quality synthetic and just so to a slightly thicker "in grade" synthetic if you must. For example both Mobil 1 Extended Performance and PP are usually more dense than regular M1. IN THE SAME GRADE!! P.S. see above for the 2 thangs you need to know re heat. P.S.P.S. Texas boys know a thang or two re towing in the heat.
