I have a 06-V6 Toyota 4runner with about 70K on the clock and this summer im going to be doing quite a bit of camper towing. The manual says to run a 5w30 oil but I was thinking would it be better to run a 5w-40 or a 10w30 for towing under high summer heat? high load?

I would rather go with a full-syn/high mileage 5W30 blend that is relatively more shear-stable and stay in-grade.

Heat is normally already put into consideration in most SUV with towing capability so no need to fret over factory recommended grade.

Q.

Do you now run a synthetic or a conventional? Is your Toyota still under warranty? What is your OCI?

If not under warranty of if that is not an issue to you, Mobil 1 10w30 HM is a good choice. It has a heavier base oil(3.66 HTHS) 1000 ZDDP, higher 100C(11.79), a heavier add package, and it is a full synthetic. If you go to the Mobil web site you can compare its pour, pumping, and other stats.

Valvoline full synthetic MaxLife 10w30 has most of the advantages of the Mobil 1 plus it keeps the ZDDP of 800 to meet ILSAC GF-4 cat requirements. They compensate, somewhat, by adding 280 MOLY while Mobil 1 is around 60, or so, MOLY.

If your camper is really heavy, roads uphill both ways, high heat, I would not hesitate to go to Mobil 1 10W-40 HM, but that is just me.

ZDDP isn't the only additive that can fulfill its role.

Running amsoil ASL 5w30 in our 07, and it seems to really like it. Toyota engines are very easy on oil.

Can't comment on the higher grade oils but, i would probably just stick to the 5w30 recomendation. Although, a good hi quality synthetic would be a good thing to use.

Have you added a trans cooler to this 4runner? Just so you know, the 4.0 V-6 does not have an external cooler so if you don't have one i'd highly recomend you have one put on. it may set you back $100 or so.
I've learned with past experience on our 99 4-runner towing a 3k lb boat. NO cooler and the transmission fluid got burnt. Not good.

I'm running ASL 5w30 and it performs really well with great used oil analysis in my truck... Using PP right now for an ARX Clean/Rinse phase...

I tow alot with my 04 Ranger 4.0L. My load is usually just a tad over 5,300 lbs which is just about maxed out. I've been running Mobil 1's 0w30 NO problems whatsoever.

06 tacoma 4.0l camper pull all summer running GC year round 5000 oci no prob..at all I make more sure you have trans cooler...

I would also recommend a trans cooler. I had a 4 Runner and added a trans temp gauge and a cooler. I was amazed at how hot the fluid got even with a cooler.

My truck came with the transcooler the towing fan clutch, trailer brake kit and oil cooler. I just got finished a run ov er the continental divide averaging 75 mph and got 22.25 MPG. Tommorow I will get back to San antonio and pick up a trailer.

My truck is under warranty. I am using oils that meet Toyotas primary requirements. ILSAC energy conserving oil. I am less worried about running a 5w20 ILSAC oil than I would be running a non ILSAC oil such as GC or a highmileage oil without the starburst.

Run the oem spec weight in a synthetic. You need to know 2 thangs.....Thinner runs cooler and synthetic runs cooler.

I have seen many fully burdened Toyota trucks last for ages on ordinary 10w30 or 5w30 oil and changed 3500-4000 miles.

That in mind if you want better protection, buy a synthetic 5w30 or 0w30.

The bigger concern is keeping the automatic transmission cool, and give it the needed oil changes (Synthetic highly recommended), and replace the gear oil in the differential(s)(Synthetic highly recommended). If you have 4WD, also be sure to replace the transfer case oil.

05 2uz v8 here..

mine has seen everything from 5w40 to 0w30...it really does not make too much of a difference. Currently running SynPower with 1qt Marvel Mystery Oil and 4oz of Auto RX...best mileage I have seen yet. I have roughly 2000miles before the change so no numbers yet on it. I have numbers for both RP 10W30 and CG and both were pretty good.

someone else said it...and ill agree with it...most toyota engines are pretty easy on oil, just pick what you want, a good filter and have a go.

I did add a nice transmission cooler and as for oil I was thinking of Shell Rotella 5w-40 synthetic oil? Do you think it's ok to go to a 5w-40 when my yota calls for a 5w30?
