Should I go with 0W30?

Doing an oil change for a buddy and his 2.2L Alero that calls for 5W30 oil. I used 5W30 PP on the last oil change and was wondering if I should stick with that, or go with M1 0W30?

His car doesn't really have consumption from what I know (oil level was full before I did his last change). Should I just stick with what is recommended or give the 0W30 a go?

Just looking for suggestions... The only advantage is that PP is cheaper for the 5-gallon jug here, $21 vs $19.

Also, it has 105,000 miles on it if that helps!

You probably won't notice any diff. Either oil or grade would be OK. Some have reported increase in consumption when switching to M1 in a higher mileage engine. If that is the case, then just switching back solves the problem. It think the 0W-30 would be a great year round oil.

How,why?

the 0w30 will serve him well,every GM i own(over 120k) specs 5w30 and 0w30 works!

OP, run the 030,try it,,it'll work fine...

It will not matter I think the M1 0W30 is available in the 5 quart jug at Walmart. On that same note their is nothing wrong with useing PP again if it worked well for him last time and is cheaper.

That's one heck of a blanket statement. Surely there are exceptions, yea?

I would try it for one OCI. If you like it better than PP, keep using it.

$19 for a 5 gallon bucket?! Where are you buying your oil?

I was pondering the same question as the OP has, and called Mobil and Pennzoil and was told that 0W-xx should work in any application that a 5W-xx would work. However, watch for leaks in older vehicles with higher mileage.

They also advised against it for my application 88 Ford E-150 4.9L with 65,000 miles, pampered. I still might try it since there are no leaks or oil useage. I like the idea of better protection when first starting, no matter how slight it might be.

Go for it, I switched to 0W-30 at 118,000 miles with no problems.
In fact, oil consumption stopped, and the car ran better than ever.

This is the kind of info I was looking for, and would be willing to give it a try. I am constantly checking things so maybe next OC I will give it a shot. My only problem is I have enough PP in my stash for 2 more oil changes.
