Son noticed Marina's '16 Camry sounded "funny'' first AM start. The battery is original,6yrs old. This morning, the voltage was 12 .2V. The start knocked it down to 10.9 V. Being as it is the wife's car, I'm inclined to be proactive. Would you replace this battery ?

Yeah, man. Catch a WM sale. I paid $88 for a 700 CCA Everstart Maxx.

When did you measure the 10.9 volts?

Anyway, it's done. Get the WM cheapie. Likely East Penn being where you live.

Buying a 59$ battery just seemed to be kicking the can down the road. I spent 98$ for a 600 amp 24f with a 3yr warranty Hecho en Mexico, so that makes it a Johnson Controls? Original battery is chilling on the steps to the shop reading 12.74 V after being on a 1/2 amp charge overnight. I used the charger to maintain stuff while I changed the batteries. The only tools I used were a 10mm wrench and a screw driver. Again,I am liking the common sense approach Toyota takes in doing things. I couldn't even see the battery in my last Transit Connect

yes, do this. no reason whatsoever to pay more for a 24F.

Yep.

I went to my local Walmart to see what group 24f Value battery there...

Made by East Penn too.

The extra money paid on batteries is largely really just for the warranty extension time.

Yeah the Value battery is the EP 524fmf battery with a Value battery sticker on it. 550 cca, weighs 37 pounds and 90 minutes reserve capacity.

The Everstart 3 year warranty battery is the 724fmf with 725 cca, weighs 44 pounds and has 120 minutes reserve capacity.

So more CCA and more weight and longer reserve capacity too.

If one thinks that the 524fmf battery will last 3 years and likely 4 or so... Then a $59 Value battery is not all bad.

After you get a $100 battery tester, you get the urge to test every battery in sight.

Unless it's the wife's car, I grab the EverStart Value batteries.

Another note here...

The Value battery group 24f aka East Penn 524fmf specs are not that far off from the East Penn group 35 battery which has a 3 year free replacement warranty...

The 735fmf group 35 East Penn battery weighs the same 37 pounds, though has 95 minutes reserve capacity vs 90 minutes of reserve capacity in the 524fmf group 24f. The 735fmf battery has 640 CCA vs 550 for the 524fmf group 24f battery.

5 minutes RC difference and 90 CCA difference between the two. Plus 2 year longer warranty on the 735fmf.

I went through the same thing on Monday with my 88 E-150. Sunday it wouldn't start. The 8 year 10 month old AAP Gold battery was at 12.2 volts after charging it up and letting it sit overnight. The alternator checked out good. I swapped it out for a NAPA Legend battery as per @Trav 's recommendation. The AAP battery owed me nothing.

That was the same age I decided to replace the battery in our old 2015 Camry. It started fine, but sounded "off". I replaced it with an East Penn 750CCA for $139 bought locally. Hopefully the next owner gets some years out of it. The Subaru isn't cranking as good as I think it should, so it will probably get an East Penn here soon...

If it’s more than 5 years old, I lean towards replacement as PM. That said the most recent batteries I replaced crossed the 5 year mark(Deka AGM at 5.5 years, Costco JCI at 5 years on the dot).
