I imagine they just settled in the bottom of the pan below the pickup.
I eventually traded the car in at less than 40K miles because by then I was pretty disgusted with it...the dealer refused to fix a bad flare with the first few 1-2 shifts on cold mornings because they said it was a "characteristic" of the car, distorted audio when listening at low volume levels, the driver side power window regulator would occasionally jam, it would frequently stink of Dexcool and needed to be topped off regularly...the dealers "solution" for that was to tape a piece of rubber hose to the top of coolant surge tank, and after they replaced the A/C compressor because it sounded like it had rocks in it--the A/C never worked correctly again. After the warranty was up I figured it was best to part with it before it got any worse.
It was a shame because I thought it was a really nice comfortable car. Must have been assembled on a Monday or something...

I'd be equally concerned why the oil filter does not capture visible chunks.
